Job Title: Trainee Accountant
Job Type: Perm
Job Location: Lanarkshire
Job Package: £25,000 - £30,000 + Benefits
The Trainee Accountant will support the Finance Department in maintaining accurate financial records, processing transactions, and assisting with financial reporting activities. Working within a fast-paced operational environment, the role provides practical exposure to cost accounting, inventory management, budgeting, and financial controls associated with production and supply chain activities.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Accounting
- Assist with the preparation and maintenance of accounting records and financial transactions.
- Process purchase invoices, supplier payments, and customer receipts.
- Assist in bank reconciliations and cash management activities.
- Support month-end and year-end closing procedures.
- Maintain accurate filing and documentation of financial records.
Cost and Operational Accounting
- Assist in monitoring operational costs, including materials, labour, and overhead expenses.
- Support the preparation of product and service costing reports.
- Help analyse operational variances and cost performance.
- Assist with inventory valuation and stock reconciliations.
- Participate in periodic stock counts and inventory audits.

Accounts Payable and Receivable
- Verify supplier invoices against purchase orders and goods received documentation.
- Assist in managing customer accounts and following up on outstanding balances.
- Reconcile supplier and customer statements.
Financial Reporting
- Assist in preparing monthly management reports and financial summaries.
- Support budget preparation and forecasting activities.
- Help gather financial data for internal and external audits.
- Prepare schedules and reports as required by management.
Compliance and Internal Controls
- Ensure compliance with organisational financial policies and procedures.
- Assist in maintaining effective internal controls over financial transactions.
- Support tax, VAT, and statutory reporting requirements.
- Help identify opportunities for process improvements within the finance function.
General Duties
- Maintain confidentiality of financial information.
- Collaborate with colleagues across operational and support functions.
- As part of a small finance team, provide cover and support for other finance activities, including sales and purchase ledger duties.
- Perform other finance and administrative duties as required.

Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- HNC, HND, or equivalent qualification in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Basic understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
Desirable
- Knowledge of accounting software or ERP systems.
- Understanding of cost accounting principles and operational finance.
