Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (Oncology) – Harrogate District NHS Foundation Trust
About the Role
Harrogate District NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to recruit a Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) to Join their Oncology Service, working across acute oncology and medical oncology.
The role will operate within an established Oncology and Acute Oncology team, including:
- Consultant Medical and Clinical Oncologists
- Acute Oncology team
- Clinical Nurse Specialist team
- Existing Advanced Clinical Practitioners
Collaboration takes place with colleagues at the tertiary centre in Leeds to ensure the highest standard of patient treatment and care.
The successful applicant will undertake a three-year training programme, progressing through Band 6 and 7 while completing an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice and an apprenticeship assessment. On completion, the post holder is expected to transition into a qualified ACP role at Band 8a.
Candidates should have substantial experience in oncology with a strong understanding of cancer treatments and pathways. Applicants who are already enrolled in advanced practice training are encouraged to apply.
The post involves joining a growing team of Advanced Practitioners and will be based within the Acute Oncology Unit.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete a three-year training programme under expert clinical supervision, achieving:
- Work-based clinical competencies
- MSc in Advanced Practice completion
- Apprenticeship end-point assessment
- Any additional required training for qualification

Deliver high-quality patient care through:
- Independent and advanced clinical assessments
- Prescribing and evidence-based treatment decisions
- Diagnostic and treatment interventions within oncology
- Advanced problem-solving using current research and best practice

Work as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team, providing support across:
- Lung oncology
- Breast oncology
- Urology oncology
- Gastrointestinal (GI) oncology
- Acute oncological emergencies

Collaborate with Consultants, specialists, and tertiary hospital teams in Leeds for superior patient outcomes.
Requirements
- Minimum 2+ years of direct experience in oncology nursing/practitioner settings (prior administrative or related roles may be considered).
- Demonstrated expertise in cancer treatment pathways, symptom management, and supportive care.
- Ability to apply advanced clinical reasoning in both acute and elective oncology contexts.
- Strong commitment to ongoing professional development and registered practitioner status (e.g., as a nurse or allied health professional).
- Prepared to undertake Band 6-8a transitional training and subsequent MSc in Advanced Practice.
- Existing apprenticeship enrolment is advantageous but not essential.
