Trainee - Assistant Welding Engineer
Murphy is recruiting for a Trainee - Assistant Welding Engineer to work with Energy at our Leeds facility supporting the day-to-day fabrication and site welding activities as required.

As a Trainee Assistant Welding Engineer, you will support the delivery of day-to-day fabrication activities within the Leeds facility and contribute to site welding operations as required. This role is designed as a development opportunity, providing hands-on experience across fabrication and site operations, alongside structured learning. The company will support your professional growth through the funding of relevant qualifications and training.
A Day in the Life of a Murphy Trainee Assistant Welding Engineer
- Deliver Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) projects serving both regulated and private customers along with technical and engineering solutions within the conventional power and energy transition markets.
- Assist in the management and maintenance of documentation associated with weld procedure specifications, qualifications, records, and welder approvals.
- Review welding specifications at bid stages.
- Assist in the implementation and execution of weld procedures at the Leeds facility and on-site.
- Support the preparation of test house instructions for WPQRs and WQTs, and assist in reviewing test results, developing an understanding of welding qualification process.
- Assist in the compilation of WPQR and WQT packages, developing an understanding of welding qualification documentation requirements.
- Assist in ensuring company management procedures are followed.
- Support ongoing reviews of welding techniques and procedures, assisting in the identification of potential improvements under guidance.
- Support Project welding procedure qualification activities and maintain weld procedure and welder qualification registers.
- Monitor production welding activities and troubleshoot any potential issues.
- Evaluate causes of welding failures and implement corrective actions.
- Attend regular operations and safety meetings as required.
- Support the development and review of Risk Assessments relating to the preparation of specific welding processes/method statements for welding operations.
- Assist in the preparation of fabrication Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) tailored to specific project requirements.
- Support the facility in maintaining compliance with BS EN ISO 3834-2 Certification.
- Developing the ability to understand and assess technical problems, supporting the generation of solutions through the application of process knowledge, experimental trials and process development.
- Supporting technical discussions and contributing to the identification of potential opportunities and ideas for internal, external, or collaborative development projects.
- Developing planning and organisational skills, assisting with the scoping, launch and delivery of projects to agreed time, cost and quality requirements.
- Working closely with engineering and technical support colleagues to help meet customer expectations.
- Communicating effectively through written, verbal and IT-based media to support business development, customer enquiries and project delivery, including exposure to customer-facing interactions.
- Taking a hands-on approach to support problem investigation and resolution, developing practical and analytical skills.

Still Interested? Does This Sound Like You?
- An interest in developing a career in welding engineering, with a willingness to work towards professional qualifications (e.g. IIW / EWF Welding Technologist or Specialist), supported by the company.
- A relevant engineering qualification (e.g. HND, foundation degree or equivalent) or currently working towards one.
- Preferred Basic knowledge or awareness of welding processes used in pipeline or pipework applications.
- Previous experience in a fabrication or engineering environment is beneficial but not essential.
- An awareness of non-destructive examination (NDE) techniques is advantageous, with opportunities to develop further knowledge in this area.
- A willingness to learn and stay up to date with developments in welding engineering and associated technologies.
