Barry Town Council is seeking a committed, reliable and respectful individual to join the Cemetery Team as a Trainee Cemetery Maintenance Operative / Gravedigger.
This is a unique opportunity to develop a rewarding career in a role that supports bereaved families and helps maintain one of the town's most important public spaces to the highest standards.
About the Role
This developmental position is designed to provide full training and support in all aspects of cemetery maintenance and grave preparation. During the first six months, you will focus on learning grounds maintenance duties, including:
- Grass cutting
- Shrub and pathway maintenance
- Litter collection
- Drainage upkeep
- Assisting with general site improvements
Subject to successful completion of this initial period, you will then progress to training in grave preparation duties, learning:
- Excavation techniques
- Grave dressing
- Backfilling
- Associated cemetery operations under close supervision

Responsibilities
Working as part of a dedicated team and reporting to the Cemeteries Manager and Sextons, you will receive structured training and development to build your skills, confidence and knowledge. The role offers a clear progression pathway, with the opportunity to advance to a fully competent Cemetery Maintenance Operative / Grave Digger upon successful completion of the programme.
Requirements
We are looking for someone who is physically fit, willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and able to approach their work with professionalism, sensitivity and respect. The successful candidate will:
- Enjoy practical, hands-on work
- Have a positive attitude towards learning new skills
- Interact courteously with members of the public during what can often be difficult and emotional circumstances
Working Conditions
The position involves:
- Working weekends on a rota basis throughout the year
- Later closures during the summer months
- Occasional Bank Holiday duties
