Job Details
- Salary: £28.2k per annum (increases to £31.3k upon successful completion of probation)
- Post-qualification potential: Additional paid standby and overtime
- Start date: September 2026
- Location: Portsmouth, Southampton, Cosham, Fareham or Havant (commute required)

About the Role

As an SGN Trainee Gas Engineer, you will repair, replace, and lay new gas mains and services—supporting our customers’ essential energy needs. No prior experience needed; we will fully equip, train, and support you.
How You’ll Contribute
- Supporting experienced engineers on-site during gas service and mains repairs
- Excavating, digging in public and private highways, and laying/repairing gas pipes
- Maintaining SGN vans and tools pre- and post-job to ensure safe, efficient working conditions
- Being fully available for 24/7 emergencies, including request for on-call, standby, and overtime where necessary

Key Responsibilities
- Learn from experienced engineers daily to develop excelsior pipeline safety skills
- Execute crucial repairs in unpredictable, often challenging outdoor conditions
- Work collaboratively as part of a team, ensuring consistent provision of gas services across the UK
- Take proactive ownership of job maintenance, system upskilling, and continuous improvements

Essential Requirements
