Trainee Geotechnical Technician

The Vacancy

Ian Farmer Associates (1998) Ltd, a member of RSK Group Ltd, is a geotechnical ground investigation company. Due to recent expansion and increasing workload an exciting opportunity has become available for a Trainee Geotechnical Technician to join the team in the UKAS accredited geotechnical soil and materials laboratory based in Washington, UK.

No experience is required, and full training will be given. Suitable candidates will have an interest in a career working in a soil laboratory environment.

Key roles and responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities associated with this position include, but are not limited to the following:

Performing a variety of physical tests on soil, rock and aggregate samples to the highest level of safety and quality standards. Develop an understanding of the test methods and why samples are tested. Assisting in the calibration and maintenance of all technical equipment. Maintaining a clean and orderly laboratory environment. Ensuring the quality of work produced is to high standards and tested in a timely manner. Sample receipt, storage and disposal.

Required experience:

5+ GCSEs including English, Maths and Science. Good numeracy and literacy: able to write clearly and accurately A good eye for detail, diligent in following procedures. Good IT skills, especially the use of MS Excel.

There will be lots of manual handling involved in the role and will require moving heavy items on a frequent basis.

Services include soil exploration by percussion boring, window sampling and mechanical excavation and rock exploration by rotary drilling and coring. Additionally, specialists are available, including materials technologists and on-site chemists, who can undertake associated testing and monitoring services and in situ tests such as plate loading, California bearing ratio and density, including nuclear density testing.

The company’s materials technology and construction engineering service operates throughout the United Kingdom, undertaking and reporting on structural and condition surveys, BREEAM assessments and asbestos surveys. Its experience includes working on buildings, multistorey car parks, bridges, roads and other structures, such as sludge digesters to determine the effects of ageing, corrosion and degradation on structural stability. The company is approved for working in confined spaces and undertaking in situ testing that includes floor load tests and strain measurements.
