Trainee Quantity Surveyor Opportunity at Equans

Equans is seeking a Trainee Quantity Surveyor to join our team, based in Long Bennington or Nottingham. This is a full-time role with a competitive salary and benefits package.

About the Role

Our office is based in Long Bennington or Nottingham. We are looking for someone eager to start their career in construction here at Equans. You should have recently completed a Construction-related degree or be willing to work towards one.

Your role will involve working on site with our operational team, learning firsthand about our business. You will be part of our trainee program, with one day of study per week to support your learning. It is preferable to have a full clean UK driving license, or to be actively working towards one.

What You Will Deliver

As a trainee, you will learn the key principles and practices of quantity surveying within the construction industry. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing support to senior quantity surveyors
  • Gaining hands-on experience in cost estimation, contract administration, and project management
  • Assisting in various stages of project development, from pre-construction through to completion

Specific tasks include:

  • Assisting with commercial administration across multiple live and pre-construction projects
  • Gathering and preparing subcontract procurement information and documentation
  • Supporting subcontractor selection, procurement scheduling, and contract issuance
  • Managing monthly applications, subcontractor accounts, and ensuring compliance with legal obligations
  • Reviewing subcontractor accounts and assisting with payment applications and final accounts
  • Monitoring costs, reporting on budgets, and supporting cost control measures
  • Tracking project progress, submitting valuations, and overseeing retention releases and payments
  • Assisting with take-offs, BOQs, scope of work schedules, and cost estimates
  • Measuring work levels monthly to support payment applications
  • Helping procure materials and identifying cost-saving opportunities
  • Providing estimating teams with accurate information for tendering
  • Supporting finance, accounts, and estimating teams in maintaining budget accuracy
  • Performing general administrative duties as needed
  • Ensuring workplace safety for yourself and others
  • Maintaining professional communication with stakeholders
  • Being flexible to travel between sites and head offices
  • Undertaking any other reasonable management requests

Who We Are Looking For

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), including Mathematics and English
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and general IT competence
  • Excellent numeracy and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to balance work and study commitments effectively
  • Enrolment in or willingness to undertake a 5-year university apprenticeship degree program
  • Experience in a surveying role and knowledge of the construction industry, including health and safety practices
  • Construction-based BTEC or NVQ, achieved or in progress
  • HND/HNC Level in a relevant construction-related course, achieved or in progress
