Trainee Yard Operative

Role: Trainee Yard Operative

Location: Newport Depot

General working hours are Monday to Friday, day shift, but occasional weekend work may be required — so you must be flexible!

Responsibilities of a Trainee Yard Operative

As a Trainee Yard Operative at our Newport depot, you’ll receive hands-on training and support while learning how to:

  • Support Traffic Management: Provide clean cones, filled sandbags, and correct signage to traffic operatives.
  • Prepare Equipment: Ensure sted traffic signals are ready and fuelled before collection.
  • Create Custom Signage: Learn to fabricate special signage as required for specific works.
  • Quality Control: Visually check all signs and cones for damage upon return to site, and log any issues.
  • Battery Management: Secure, account for, and correctly charge all batteries following company procedures.
  • Maintain Equipment: Clean, re-sleeve, re-base, and security-mark cones to keep them in top condition.
  • Organise the Yard: Return all equipment (pedestrian barriers, signs, cones, sandbags) to their correct locations.
  • General Yard Duties: Undertake various tasks as instructed by the Yard Supervisor.
  • Adherence to Procedures: Follow all company protocols for quality, health, safety, and environmental compliance.

What Good Looks Like for a Trainee Yard Operative

  • Full UK driving licence (manual only, with <6 penalty points)
  • Right to work in the UK (unsponsored)
  • Physically fit and capable
  • Able to pass a drug and alcohol test
