Training Contract 2028/2029
TRAINING CONTRACT
Completing a training contract at HFW opens the door to becoming a global lawyer.
What We Offer
We are a sector-focused firm, however there is much more to us than that. Our passion for the sectors which we service, together with our progressive mindset adds a value to our clients that we consider second to none.
Every year we recruit only a small number of trainees – around 18 per year, split across a September and March intake. This enables us to give every trainee our full attention, and means that your individual contribution makes a real difference. A training contract at HFW consists of four six-month seats – typically three contentious seats and one transactional.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

As a Trainee, almost all of the matters that you work on will have an international dimension. We also offer international secondments to our Trainees to provide them with the opportunity to experience our international network first-hand and all of our Trainees complete at least one seat abroad, which we consider to be a core part of your development as an international lawyer.
You will work with high-profile clients on complex, often precedent-setting cases and transactions. You will gain experience of both litigation and transactional work.
