Job Description

Prospective officers and staff must be held to a higher standard of behaviour and accountability than members of the public, and that therefore their right to privacy can be fettered in certain circumstances. This is to ensure that members of the police are fully aware and accountable for the unique powers entrusted to them and the standards of professional behaviour they swear to uphold.

About The Role

Training Officer – Initial Training

There is an exciting opportunity to join West Midlands Police’s Learning & Development Department as a Training Officer within the Uniform Training Team.

As one of the first people our new recruits interact with, you’ll play a vital role in preparing probationary police officers and police staff for the start of their careers. Through engaging, high-quality learning, you’ll help develop the knowledge, confidence and professionalism needed to serve the communities of the West Midlands.

You’ll research, design and deliver learning programmes aligned to the National Policing Curriculum and organisational priorities, creating an inclusive learning environment where every learner can succeed. Working closely with colleagues and subject matter experts, you’ll continuously develop learning solutions that remain relevant, evidence-based and operationally effective. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about learning and development and wants to make a lasting impact by helping shape the future workforce of West Midlands Police.

Key Responsibilities

Staff within the Uniform Training Team are often the first members of West Midlands Police that new recruits engage with. As a Training Officer, you’ll play a significant role in creating a positive introduction to policing while supporting learners throughout their development.

You’ll Be Responsible For

  • Designing, preparing and delivering engaging learning and development programmes aligned to College of Policing learning outcomes and organisational priorities.
  • Managing the learner journey, creating an inclusive learning environment that supports a range of learning styles and abilities.
  • Coaching, mentoring and assessing learners, providing constructive feedback to maximise performance and development.
  • Leading practical learning activities and role-play assessments to build operational competence.
  • Reviewing and developing learning materials to ensure they remain current, evidence-based and operationally effective.
  • Working collaboratively with subject matter experts and stakeholders to continuously improve learning programmes.
  • Promoting professional standards, equality, diversity and inclusion throughout all learning activities.
  • Supporting organisational learning by embedding new legislation, best practice and operational developments into training delivery.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

As part of our commitment we operate a ‘Disability Confident Interview Scheme’ - all candidates who declare a disability and meet the essential criteria for the role will be offered an interview. It is important to note that there may be occasions where it is not practicable or appropriate to interview all disabled people who meet the essential criteria for the job. For example: in certain recruitment situations such as high-volume, seasonal and high-peak times, the employer may wish to limit the overall numbers of interviews offered to both disabled people and non-disabled people. Against this backdrop, the force handles more than 2,000 emergency calls every day, while patrolling the streets and responding to incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
