About The Role

HMRC has launched the Customer Experience Directorate (CXD), uniting colleagues across the organisation to transform customer interactions. This new team is laser-focused on delivering simpler, accessible, and effective services in both English and Welsh.

We are recruiting for an enthusiastic and proactive translator based in Cardiff to join the Welsh Language Unit. This is a brilliant opportunity to contribute to high-quality translation services, supporting HMRC’s commitment to bilingual communication.

Job Description

Core Responsibilities

Your role will include:

  • Producing and proofreading high-quality English-to-Welsh translations across diverse materials.
  • Using translation software to enhance workflow efficiency.
  • Supporting terminology development and consistent written style.
  • Collaborating on real-world translation projects, broadening your expertise in:
    • Customer management
    • Modern translation tools
    • Welsh language service delivery

Person Specification

Key Responsibilities (Recurrent Duties)

  • Delivering precise English-to-Welsh translations for varied documents.
  • Expertise in using and optimising translation tools.
  • Contributing to terminology consistency and written style refinement.
  • Actively providing feedback to improve Welsh language service quality.

Essential Criteria

✅ Fluency in written and spoken Welsh and English. ✅ Degree in Welsh or equivalent qualification/experience in Welsh translation. ✅ Demonstrated knowledge of translation tools and processes (digital/offline). ✅ Ability to prioritise workloads and communicate effectively with stakeholders. ✅ Understanding of customer service needs in Welsh.

👍 Membership of Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru (Association of Welsh Translators). 👍 Strong familiarity with formats like Word, Excel, PDF, and HTML.


Key Information for Applicants

Salutation & Commitments

  • Salary: £31,096 annual (plus £9,008 annual pension contribution from HMRC).
  • Working Flexibility: Hybrid policy—up to 2 days/week remote work (office-based role, 60% including).

Selection Process

📌 Full application submission in Welsh (CV + Personal Statement). ▸ CV – Include employment history, qualifications, and translation experience (1-page, name-blind). ▸ Personal Statement (1,000 words max) – Explain:

  • Your qualifications and skills relevant to Welsh translation.
  • How you meet the Key Responsibilities and Essential Criteria. ▸ Desirable Criteria Statement (250 words, optional) – Attach if applicable.

📝 Assessment Phases:

  1. Sift – CV + Personal Statement reviewed.
  2. Interview – Conducted in Welsh and English. Tests experience, behaviours, and Welsh skills, paired with a written translation test. Assessed for:
    • Behaviours: Communicating/Influencing / Quality Service / Delivering at Pace.
    • Technical: Proofreading full Welsh translations after interview.

About Hybrid Working

While your role requires office attendance (60%), we offer flexibility for up to 2 days remote work/week in suitable home environments.
