About This Role
We’re seeking Project Management Professionals with experience in consultation, design, or systems/network planning for Transmission and/or Distribution Networks in the UK and Ireland. You’ll bring expertise in high-voltage substation design, with a proven track record navigating complex technical and regulatory landscapes.
This role is global, based in the Energy Networks team—part of WSP’s rapidly growing group—where collaboration between the UK/Ireland and worldwide operations delivers innovation and impact.
Responsibilities

Leadership & Delivery:
- Form, consult, and manage the multidisciplinary project team, including ownership of escalation frameworks
- Collaborate on complex requirements beyond WSP, ensuring end-to-end service excellence
- Define and agree project deliverables with stakeholders, balancing technical rigor with client needs

Clients & Stakeholder Management:
- Own contract delivery, liaising with external + internal stakeholders to mitigate risk and enhance buy-in
- Evolve client relationships from proposal through project lifecycle

Programme & Resource Control:
- Develop robust project plans, including resourced programs (integration with MS Project/Primavera P6)
- Forecast budget spend, monitor cost variance, consolidate financial reporting
- Ensuring effective resource allocation against evolving schedules and risks

Engineering & Bid Support:
- Lead engineering teams in technical deliverables, including requirements specification and design accountability
- Support bid teams in developing innovative tender responses, confidently championing position
- Manage risk/change methodologies, ensuring robust quality assurance

- Operational Excellence:
- Coordinate sub-contracted consultancy services across frameworks and global WSP resources
- Advise on emerging risks and opportunities, driving proactive strategies
Technical & Regulatory Scope
Design expertise includes:
- Transformer facilities, MV/HV substations
- Switchyards, extra high-voltage (EHV) projects + high-voltage direct current (HVDC)
- SCADA/DMS and distribution management systems
- Underground/subsea cable projects
Our commitment to the UK/Ireland’s regulated and non-regulated energy sector ensures alignment with:
- S measuring requirements (SMETS1/2)
- Grid Code implementation (national distribution/local distribution companies)
- Client-specific frameworks (DNO/TSO charters)
What You’ll Bring
Core Qualifications & Experience
- Project Management Professional: Hands-on track record in delivering energy transmission & distribution projects (W την UK/EE regulations, value-for-money targets)
- UK-specific experience: Direct knowledge of both TSOs/DNO policy and commercial practices
- Priorerical PM cadre: Requisite APM/PMI qualifications or equivalent recognised education/track record
- Technical fluency: Deep grasp of substation/transmission design and conciliation of multiple disciplines
Key Skills & Tools
- Freelance client-facing skills: Proven capability in collaborating with clients, negotiation, and client satisfaction metrics
- MS Office proficiency: Strong experience with MS Project; Primavera P6 would be advantageous
- Education: Appropriate higher education qualification in a relevant engineering discipline
