Your impact
At Jacobs, we’re building the future of transport—safer streets, smarter networks, and better-connected communities.
Jacobs’ Cities & Places business is expanding across the Midlands, and we are looking for a Senior / Principal Transport Planner to join our established and growing Transport Planning team in Birmingham. You’ll be part of a vibrant regional group of more than 40 transport planners and engineers, all focused on shaping effective, sustainable, and future-ready transport solutions for clients across the UK and beyond.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who wants to play a central role in delivering strategic, innovative, and people-focused transport planning work.
As a key member of our Midlands Transport Planning team, you will be involved at the front end of solving complex transport challenges. Your work will span a diverse range of activities, including:
- Developing transport strategies, masterplans, and policy-led recommendations.
- Preparing and appraising Transport Assessments, Business Cases, and other analytical work across projects of varying scale and complexity.
- Supporting the delivery of public transport schemes, helping shape systems that improve connectivity and user experience.
- Advising clients on emerging technologies such as electric vehicles, mobility innovation, and demand-responsive transport.
- Working closely with clients needing Highways Development Management expertise, applying planning policy and guidance to shape development proposals and ensure high-quality, sustainable outcomes.
You’ll collaborate with Local Authorities, Sub-National Transport Bodies, National Highways, and a wide variety of public and private sector clients. While the role is Midlands-focused, you’ll also have opportunities to work with colleagues across the UK and internationally.
In this role, you will take a blend of technical, leadership, and mentoring responsibilities, including:
- Leading tasks and packages of work on strategic transport planning projects.
- Supporting and supervising junior planners and analysts to develop their skills and confidence.
- Providing clear and structured technical direction to ensure high-quality project outputs.
- Engaging with clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams to shape solutions and influence decision-making.
- Building your professional network, developing innovative approaches, and helping to identify new opportunities.
- Working with your line manager and technical specialists to support your own development and progression.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
