Transport Planner
Senior Transport Manager – Road Schedule (Freightliner Group)
About the Role
Freightliner Group is the UK's largest maritime intermodal logistics operator, transporting containers across deep-sea ports to inland terminals and leading UK Heavy Haul rail freight services. With operations spanning Europe, we connect freight networks across the continent seamlessly. Within the UK, the group operates under multiple entities, including Freightliner Ltd, Pentalver Transport Ltd, and Pentalver Cannock Ltd.
We are seeking a disciplined, deadline-driven, and freight-savvy candidate to take charge of our road transport scheduling operations. You will manage daily operations, ensure compliance, and drive profitability through strategic decision-making, cost efficiency, and strong stakeholder relationships.
Key Responsibilities
schedule coordination & customer engagement
- Plan and control the daily road schedule in a dynamic environment, ensuring on-time deliveries meet customer requirements, statutory regulations, and company deadlines.
- Effectively invest wagon and road fleet utilising efficient scheduling while maintaining profitability and competitiveness.
- Monitor delays and issues, and resolve customer complaints in a prompt, professional manner.
- Maintain continuous communication with Contract Managers to ensureargo aligns with customer demand fluctuations.
- Proactively notify customers and internal teams about schedule changes, delays ("late runners"), and demurrage claims.

operational management & compliance
- Supervise enrolled drivers and subcontractors, ensuring adherence to safety standards, regulations, and internal policies.
- Manage disciplinary and performance issues in collaboration with the Road Transport Manager.
- Monitor driver location in real-time to ensure smooth operation of daily routes.
- Ensure compliance with road operations legislation, driver’s hours restrictions, and ADR regulations for hazardous goods movements.
- Liaise with the Road Transport Manager to identify commercial opportunities that improve route efficiency.
cost & resource optimisation
- Strategically utilise private and contract vehicles to meet operational needs at optimum cost.
- Minimise overtime and carefully schedule driver start times to control payroll expenses.
- Contribute to fleet upgrades or temporary resource hiring recommendations to align with market trends and demand.
collaborative reporting & risk mitigation
- Communicate container status, job timelines, and potential risks (e.g., late deliveries) to customers, customer services, and Contract Managers.
- Ensure depot staff are intelligence in customer service expectations to retain high-quality works.
- Prepare daily/weekly reports tracking critical KPIs and sharing findings with senior leadership.
Requirements & Skills

- Proven freight transport planning and operations experience, including knowledge of intermodal transport networks.
- Valid National CPC or International CPC certification – essential exemption.
- Familiarity with road transport regulations and documentation standards (e.g., Tops Road/ERIC systems, ADR compliance).
- Proficient in MS Excel, Word, and transport planning IT systems.
- Strong analytical ability, prioritisation skills to handle last-minuteefehl issues efficiently.
- Exceptional communication, stakeholder engagement, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work flexibly around your shift roster (to include night or follow-on days as needed).
