Transport Planning Director
Senior Transport Planner & Team Lead (Manchester)
SLR is seeking a high-calibre individual to lead and grow our Transport Planning team based in Manchester.
SLR is an environmental consultancy specialising in transport planning, with a vision to deliver a meaningful, enduring impact on society through improved connectivity, mobility, and behaviour change. We drive decarbonisation, innovate mobility solutions, and reshape travel mindsets.
Led by an experienced management team, we combine the expertise of social scientists, transport planners, and climate specialists to develop science-based, net zero carbon reduction targets. As part of SLR & Wardell Armstrong, we offer a strong presence in the Midlands and Northern England, with offices in Birmingham, Nottingham, Manchester, and Leeds.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and expand the Transport Planning team in Manchester, collaborating with directors and associates across the region.
- Generate new business opportunities from both existing and future clients.
- Foster a positive, health-focused culture and ensure health, safety, and wellbeing standards are met.
- Build and manage client relationships to secure and deliver projects.
- Recruit and grow the transport planning team.
- Provide expert transport planning advice to support clients’ land-use development objectives.
- Manage and deliver complex development projects, including:
- Feasibility studies
- Promotion of development
- Local plan engagement
- Planning application support
- Negotiation of resolutions
- Appeals and public inquiries (where necessary)
- Establish and manage project feasibility agreements and oversee financial aspects.
- Raise CDM (Construction (Design and Management) Regulations) awareness within the team.
- Mentor and support the career development of team members.
- Stay at the forefront of technical, policy, and legal developments in transport and planning.
- Ensure "value-added" outcomes in all projects.

About You
We are seeking a commercially astute, experienced transport planner with a track record in business development, team leadership, and client relations. Key requirements include:
- Extensive experience in the development sector, including private and public sector projects.
- Proven ability to win new work and build strong interpersonal and client relationships.
- Expertise in financial management at both project and team levels.
- Technical proficiency in transport strategy development, especially in:
- Transport modelling
- Sustainable development strategies
- Commercial transport solutions
- Strong knowledge of UK planning policy, regulations, and legal frameworks.
- Exceptional communication and leadership skills, with a focus on continuous professional development.
- Experience in CDM compliance, appeals, and development negotiation.
