Transport Planning Engineer – Suffolk County Council

Location: Endeavour House, Ipswich, Suffolk IP1 2BX (Hybrid Working) Salary: £34,434 – £40,777 per annum (pro rata for part-time) Hours: 37 hours per week (flexible working available) Contract: Permanent position

About the Role

Reimagine the possibilities. As a Transport Planning Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping sustainable development in Suffolk, collaborating across departments, developers, and local authorities to agree high-quality, forward-thinking infrastructure solutions.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Public consultancy: Represent the Local Highway Authority in planning consultations to enforce high standards of sustainable transport—promoting its benefits to Suffolk’s communities.
  • Social engagement: Negotiate development agreements that balance growth ambitions with essential transport improvements, mitigating impacts while supporting inclusivity.
  • Transport assessment: Evaluate applications and contribute to town-wide transport plans that enhance connectivity, safety, and accessibility for all users.
  • Core services: Work alongside colleagues to identify and deliver practical initiatives (e.g., active travel) that align with Suffolk’s long-term sustainability goals.

Key Responsibilities

The Transport Planning Team is central to Suffolk’s Transport Strategy, spearheading sustainable growth through:

  • Development management: Provide expert technical input to local planning authorities to assess and approve new developments that meet both growth and net-zero transport objectives.
  • Smart infrastructure: Lead securing funding for bold transport initiatives, particularly those promoting active travel.
  • Collaborative impact: Ensure development aligns with equitable connectivity, sustainability, and safe community design through collaborative forward-thinkers.
