Transport Planning Officer Apprentice

Transport Planning Officer Apprentice – Are You Passionate About Shaping the Future of Transport?

About the Role

West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), in partnership with Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), invites applications for the Transport Planning Officer Apprentice role. This is an exciting chance to contribute meaningfully to some of the region's largest transport projects—including metro expansions, rail station developments, bus priority schemes, and cycling/walking infrastructure—while kickstarting your career in transport planning.

What You’ll Be Doing

In this hands-on, apprenticeship-based role, you’ll:

  • Support the delivery of major transport projects that enhance regional connectivity and fuel economic growth.
  • Analyse transport, economic, and demographic data to inform decisions and develop evidence-based strategies.
  • Develop expertise in leading planning tools, including:
    • Transport modelling
    • GIS systems
    • Accessibility analysis
  • Assist with project appraisals and monitoring/evaluation frameworks to measure impact and effectiveness.
  • Collaborate on research, business cases, and funding bids to secure multimillion-pound investments.
  • Engage with stakeholders and the public to shape solutions that reflect community needs.
  • Work across a range of transport modes (rail, buses, cycling, walking) under the guidance of experienced planners.

What’s Expected of You

Qualifications & Early Skills

  • Three A levels (or equivalent e.g. BTEC/T-Level) at BBB or above, plus:
    • GCSE in English (Grade 4/C or above)
    • GCSE in Maths (Grade 4/C or above)
    • GCSE in IT (Grade 4/C or above)
  • Note: If you’re awaiting results (August 2026), you’re encouraged to still apply!

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
