Transport Shift Manager

Nights Transport Shift Manager (Bedford)

Location: Bedford Schedule: 4 on 4 off nights roster

About the Role

We are seeking a Nights Transport Shift Manager to join our Transport Team in Bedford. In this critical role, you will lead a fleet of 150 tractor units responsible for delivering up to 200 retail orders daily, including x-dock and trunking routes from our Distribution Centre.

This position requires hands-on management of operations, heavy responsibility for safe and efficient deliveries, and a strong focus on performance, team accountability, and compliance.


Key Accountabilities

  • Team Leadership & Control:

    • Manage a team of drivers and clerical staff, ensuring adherence to company guidelines, professionalism, and operational efficiency.
    • Provide direction, leadership, and motivation to achieve high performance standards.
    • Foster a collaborative team culture where colleagues understand their environmental and health & safety responsibilities.
  • Operational Excellence & Accountability:

    • Oversee daily operations to ensure high performance levels and excellence in service delivery to stores and customers.
    • Achieve targeted daily/weekly KPIs (Key Performance Indicators).
    • Challenge unsound practices and promote best-in-class health, safety, and environmental compliance.

  • Service & Operational Delivery:

    • Deliver first-class service to the store network, including safe and timely stock deliveries.
    • Ensure administrative standards remain optimal (e.g., compliance with RTD, EU Driver Hours Rules, and the Working Time Directive).
  • Performance Monitoring & Staff Oversight:

    • Conduct detailed pre-drive "Pre-Briefs" and post-shift "De-Briefs" for all drivers.
    • Track performance, timekeeping, overtime, and sickness, taking appropriate corrective actions where necessary.
  • Yard Management & Systems:

    • Manage shunter operations to optimise efficiency and punctuality of yard/transfacts.
    • Maintain Accudata Transport Database with accurate records.
  • Flexibility & Responsibilities:

    • Perform additional duties as required for seamless operational management.

Skills & Experience Required

  • Management Experience:
    • Proven experience managing a volume-driven transport operation with responsibility for teams and performance outcomes.
  • Leadership & Team Management:
    • Outstanding leadership, team-building, and motivational skills.
  • Health & Safety Awareness:
    • Commitment to driving safety excellence and challenging poor practices.
