Company Description
Legal Action Group (LAG) is a non-profit organisation that supports and empowers those providing legal services and using the law to achieve justice for people who are disadvantaged or marginalized. LAG publishes and disseminates accessible, high-quality, and up-to-date legal information to help practitioners and communities navigate the legal system effectively. The organization delivers education and training, and creates opportunities for the exchange of ideas among legal professionals and justice advocates. LAG also serves as an authoritative voice, speaking up for justice and working to improve law and practice to better protect the rights of those who struggle to be heard.
Role Description
The Treasurer plays a key role in the organisation, working closely with the Chair, the CEO, the Finance Manager and fellow Trustees on the Board. We are keen to appoint an experienced senior finance professional who shares our interest in and commitment to social justice. The role will include assisting with the delivery of the organisation’s mission through good governance, fit for purpose financial systems and deliverable financial plans through strong partnership working with staff and trustees.

Main Responsibilities
- Providing financial oversight and scrutiny at board level
- Chair the Finance Committee and provide regular reports to the Board of Trustees
- Ensuring appropriate financial controls and processes are in place
- Supporting the board in making informed financial decisions
We are seeking a candidate with experience of financial management including some experience of charity finances.
Person Specification
Essential
- Proven ability to communicate and present financial information to members of the Board.
- Analytical and evaluation skills, demonstrable good judgement.
- Understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.
- Senior level managerial and leadership experience.
- Commitment to the charity’s mission and values and willingness to act as ambassador to stakeholders.
- Experience of working with or for charities.
- Recognised accounting qualification.

Desirable
- Previous experience as a charity trustee.
- Skills in, and experience, of strategic planning.
- Knowledge of the social justice/legal/publishing sector.
Time commitment
3-6 hours per month, including:
- Board meetings every two months
- Finance sub-committee meeting monthly
- Preparation for meetings
- Annual strategy day
Reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
