Waste Water Operative (General) – Critical Role
Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.
Most people don’t think too much about how clean water reaches their taps or what happens to their wastewater.
But Scottish Water does. In fact, it’s all we think about.
Want to join us? You’ll be on the front lines of making sure Scotland’s water is totally, dependably pure.
What You’ll Do
You’ll be part of a team of Waste Water Operatives, working to protect Scotland’s environment—ensuring waste is managed responsibly and always looking for ways to do even more.
On one hand, it’s about meeting regulations. On the other, it’s about innovation—all while doing what’s right for the environment.
Daily Responsibilities
- Monitor and maintain treatment processes on wastewater (covering everything from sedimentation to filtration)
- Record key performance metrics and file reports
- Handle and analyse samples and test results, recommending improvements where possible
- Oversee regular equipment maintenance to ensure smooth operations
What You’ll Bring
We’ll train you on the technical aspects of the role. Before that, you’ll need to bring:
- The ability to communicate clearly and work effectively on your own
- Comfort with digital systems (quick learning curve helps!)
- Sharp attention to detail—accuracy is non-negotiable for recordings and safety procedures
- Strong problem-solving skills—our goal? Zero risk of error or health/safety failures
- An ability to recognise trends and improve processes over time
- Flexibility to take standby shifts (including out-of-hours work) as part of the rota

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
Start with a chat, not a search bar
Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Experience fit

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
— Honesty time — Wastewater sites don’t come with a scent like cut grass or freshly baked bread, so you’ll need to be comfortable with the environment for the sake of Scotland’s water.
