Job Purpose
This postholder will deliver NatureScot’s suite of biodiversity indicators, including:
- Scottish Biodiversity Strategy Outcomes reporting
- Contribution to Natural Environment (Scotland) Act statutory target reporting
- Leadership of reporting to JNCC for the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
- UK indicator reporting oversight
Already a well-documented role requiring strategic and analytical expertise in biodiversity data.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- Collaborate across NatureScot and partners (including government agencies and environmental NGOs) to develop and produce biodiversity trends and indicators.
- Communicate findings through appropriate channels—digital platforms, traditional media, and external engagement—to maximise understanding and impact.
- Proactively resolve issues for the Biodiversity Evidence Team, escalating complex matters to the Biodiversity Evidence and Reporting Manager as needed.
- Promote collaborative working both within their team and across NatureScot.
Role Requirements
Must-Have Skills & Experience
- Comprehensive knowledge of biodiversity (specialisation desirable but not required).
- Strong abilities to communicate at scale, adapting to technical, policy, and lay audiences.
- Mathematical and analytical skills to develop, refine, and present trends.
- Ability to produce written materials tailored to diverse readers (scientific, policy, public).
- Strong time management, prioritising workloads, and planning experience.
- Willingness to engage in professional development while managing contracts and stakeholder relationships (e.g., butterfly data, breeding bird trends).
- Occasional travel (Scotland and UK) as part of conferences and meetings.
- Representing NatureScot and potentially covering for the Senior Manager during absence.

Essential Soft Skills

- Clear understanding of health and safety requirements within public sector duties.
Person Specification
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- Degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline (e.g., ecology, environmental science, geography, statistics).
- Deep understanding of biodiversity and conservation.
- Ability to communicate complex numerical data to non-technical audiences.
- Proficient time and project management.
- Comfort representing NatureScot via media (traditional and social platforms).
Desirable Skills
- Knowledge of natural capital and ecosystem services.
- R language familiarity for data analysis.
- Awareness of Scottish and global biodiversity policy.
Eligibility & Criteria
- Must be UK-work-eligible and reside in Scotland for the contract duration.
- Complete a Disclosure Scotland application.
- Gaelic language skills are desirable to support NatureScot’s Gaelic Language Plan. (Note: No formal prerequisite.)
