House Officer - Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery manages all patients within this specialty. This post is a vital component of the service, catering to a population of approximately 400,000 within the region. The department handles a high-volume, diverse workload and collaborates closely with Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Dermatology, and Ophthalmology, alongside an active Orthodontics Unit.
Most out-patient and day case activities occur in a purpose-built dedicated facility at Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro, featuring:
- Designated out-patient waiting areas
- Examination and treatment rooms
- Day case theatre
- Consultants’ offices
- Secretarial and clerical area
- Nurses’ office
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Work
- Management and treatment of patients across the full scope of Oral Surgery and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, including:
- Out-patient clinics (new and follow-up cases)
- Operating lists (trauma and scheduled surgeries)
- On-call duties

- Maintain clinical standards in all Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery cases.
Departmental Leadership

Share day-to-day management responsibilities with colleagues, including on-call commitments.

Commit to continuing medical education (CME/CPD) and active participation in Clinical Governance and Audit.

Fulfill scheduled duties (weekly timetables) and out-of-hours responsibilities where applicable.

Named Educational Supervisor available for guidance.
Workload
- Clinical commitment: Minimum 6 sessions per week, up to a maximum of 10.
- Operating lists: MOS, IV Sedation, Day Case (GA), and Inpatient surgeries.
- On-call duties:
- Regular weekday coverage (including overnight)
- 1:6 weekend on-call (48-hour shifts)
