Content Moderation Specialist - UK Remote Role

Overview

This Content Moderation Specialist role involves reviewing a wide range of media, including but not limited to images, videos, audio, URLs, and text-based content, based on guidelines and policies. Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing a ticketing queue and moderating content based on GitHub's Terms of Service.
  • Reviewing highly sensitive material (e.g., malware, phishing, intellectual property, hate speech, harassment).
  • Collaborating with teams while adhering to privacy policies.
  • Reporting content vulnerabilities or tooling issues.

Note: This role may require occasional weekend work, and some assignments involve reviewing graphic, violent, sexual, or distressing material.


Responsibilities

Content Moderation & Analysis

  • Review and analyze media content (images, videos, audio, URLs, text) under established guidelines.
  • Identify and block violating content (hate speech, harassment, disruptive behavior, spam) tied to high-risk categories such as cybersecurity and intellectual property.
  • Apply superset of guidelines to effect containment of malicious or harmful activities.
  • Build an understanding of dynamic threats while ensuring alignment with GitHub’s privacy policies.

Queue Management

  • Prioritize and assign tasks across moderation queues.
  • Use GitHub’s tools (moderation tools, third-party integrations) to flag and escalate concerns.
  • Follow work instructions while ensuring efficient collaboration with cross-team support.

Project & Tooling Refinement

  • Assist in engagement initiatives with oversight from senior team members.
  • Recommend improvements to policies, procedures, or tooling based on workflow position.
  • Submit tooling enhancement requests under supervision, fostering learning and process evolution.

Wellbeing & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Participate in team wellness programs while maintaining emotional resilience.
  • Engage with stakeholders and help advance projects using well-thought-out methodologies.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in privacy-sensitive roles (e.g., cybersecurity, digital safety, content moderation, compliance, law enforcement, or legal support). OR
    • A Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field.
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 6+ months of experience in a specialty compliance area (technical or legal).
  • 1+ year of expertise in JavaScript.

Additional/Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of content sensitivity exposure (e.g., malware review, GDPR/modelling privacy risks).
  • Version control systems familiarity (Git) or experience with software development best practices.
  • Experience with Metavscroll or similar managerial solutions, preferably in external-written manuals for outreach.
