Trust & Safety Specialist I

Content Moderation and Analysis Specialist (Entry-Mid Level)

About the Role

Appearance-based content moderation position for GitHub, the world’s leading AI-powered developer platform. As part of GitHub’s commitment to promoting open-source collaboration, this role involves learning to review sensitive content—such as images, videos, audio, URLs, and text—to protect users from harmful or abusive material while ensuring compliance with terms of service.

Key Responsibilities

Content Moderation and Analysis

  • Learn and apply guidelines to evaluate and classify content, including malware, phishing, intellectual property violations, harassment, hate speech, and disruptive behaviour in alignment with GitHub’s Terms of Service.
  • Identify patterns and discrepancies in content compliance, providing recommendations for action under manager/peer guidance.
  • Ensure data privacy adherence by restrictively accessing only approved GitHub data.
  • Participate in calibration sessions to align team interpretation of guidelines.

Queue Management

  • Manage ticketing and moderation queues, prioritising tasks under supervisory oversight (using tools such as in-house or third-party moderation systems).
  • Receive and execute structured work instructions from project leads.
  • Collaborate with multi-team stakeholders to deliver processes efficiently.

Project Engagement

  • Support projects and engagements under senior or Program Manager collaboration (e.g., research and recommendations on trends).

Tooling Refinement

  • Identify tooling limitations such as AI output accuracy, template flaws or integrations, analysing root causes and submitting issues + requests to engineering/aj asociates under supervision.
  • Recommend improvements for version control/branching/linking, dashboard, or webhook video explanation tooling, balancing technical traction and business impact.

Wellbeing & Growth

  • Engage in team wellness programs and demonstrate emotional resilience in high-pressure situations.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive culture, modelling personal wellness ownership.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Contribute to project narratives (such as strategy decks or proposals) with guidance from senior peers/programs.

Managing Escalations

  • Investigate and resolve user reports, advising clear rationale to internal teams or CELA (Corporate Enterprise Legal Affairs).
  • Escalate unresolved issues to relevant teams (support, management, CELA) using value-based triage (aligning decisions to GitHub’s risk thresholds and mission).

Qualifications

Required/Minimum

  • 2+ years experience in roles requiring privacy, discretion, or exposure to sensitive content (e.g., cybersecurity, content review, data annotation, legal paralegal support, or law enforcement). OR
  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (computers, sociology, law, health sciences) plus 6+ months of compliance-specific training in technical hacking, legal assisting, or digital safety, OR equivalent.
  • 6+ months experience in compliance specialities:
    • Technical: Coding (JavaScript or cybersecurity/opensource OS investigations), technical support, or analysable coding environments (e.g., issue tracking/activity dashboards).
    • Legal: Paralegal, legal assistant, or IFRA/OS discovery roles.
    • General Abuse: Moderation, user escalations, or reputational risk analysis.
  • 1+ year writing/JavaScript script reviews (logic-based task flows) but minimum technical bias required (OSS/lawstanding, collaboration insights preferred).

Preferred

  • 3+ years in discretion exposure roles as above OR a combined Bachelor’s Degree + 1+ year sensitivity exposure.
  • 6+ months experience interacting directly with users/customers (e.g., team escalations, moderated volunteer communications).
  • Proficiency in version control tools (e.g., Git, Mercurial).
