Role Descriptor: Trustee
Trustees play a key role in guiding and supporting Supporting Healthcare Heroes UK (SHH-UK). As a trustee, you will work with fellow board members to help shape the charity’s future, ensure it is well governed, and support its mission to improve the lives of healthcare workers affected by Long Covid.
Key responsibilities include:
- Helping to develop and oversee the charity’s strategy and priorities.
- Ensuring the charity operates effectively, ethically and in line with its charitable objectives.
- Monitoring progress against our goals and supporting continuous improvement.
- Overseeing financial sustainability, budgets and risk management.
- Contributing to board discussions and decision-making.
- Acting as an ambassador for SHH-UK and helping to raise awareness of our work.
- Sharing your skills, knowledge and experience to strengthen the organisation.
- Supporting specific projects, committees or initiatives where appropriate.
As a small, volunteer-led charity, trustees often take a hands-on approach. This may include reviewing documents, contributing to campaigns, attending events, supporting volunteers, advising on new initiatives, or helping develop partnerships and funding opportunities.
As a small charity, there will be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond trustee meetings. This may involve scrutinising trustee papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, presenting externally, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.

Personal skills and qualities
We are looking for people who are passionate about our mission and committed to helping Supporting Healthcare Heroes UK (SHH-UK) make a positive difference to healthcare workers affected by Long Covid.
You do not need previous trustee experience to apply. We welcome applications from people with a range of professional and lived experiences who can bring fresh perspectives, skills and ideas to our board.
We are particularly interested in individuals with experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Social media and digital engagement
- Communications, marketing or public relations
- Website development, management or digital content
- Fundraising, income generation or grant applications
- Volunteer recruitment, management and support
- Current clinical experience within healthcare
We are looking for people who can demonstrate:
- A commitment to SHH-UK’s vision, values and objectives.
- An understanding of, or willingness to learn about, the responsibilities of being a charity trustee.
- The ability to think strategically and contribute to long-term planning.
- Good judgement and the ability to make balanced decisions in the best interests of the charity.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- A willingness to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Reliability and a commitment to preparing for and attending meetings.

Terms of appointment
Terms of office
Trustees are appointed for an initial 3 year term of office, with possible renewal for 2 further terms to a maximum of 9 years.
This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
Time commitment
The expected time commitment for this role is approximately six to eight hours a month, including attendance at board and committee meetings and other relevant activities.
