Cambridge Money Advice Centre (MAC)
Cambridge Money Advice Centre (MAC) was founded in 2004 as a practical Christian response to the growing problem of debt in our city and county.
Join our Trustee Board and help transform the lives of people struggling with unmanageable debt.
What difference will you make?
As a member of a small Trustee team you will contribute significantly to ensuring that MAC continues to transform the lives of those it helps. Your work as trustees provides the framework on which we are able to provide a quality service to enable us to change lives. Debt Advice is rightly highly regulated so having trustees who feel confident in understanding policies and procedures and rules gives our Advisers and our funders confidence to continue to work with us.
in the words of one client
“I can't put in words how grateful I am for all the help and understanding you have been to me in helping me out of a very dark place and time, you guys are true life savers. Thanks for all time and effort that you put into helping me over the last year or so.”
For more stories of our clients see our annual report either via the Charity Commission Site or on our website (https://www.cambridgemoneyadvicecentre.org.uk/who-are-we)
When you work with us you will quickly discover that we are all very passionate about our clients and how we can make a difference to them. Joining us will make a difference to you too. It is hugely rewarding to work with a charity where you can easily see the impact that you are having on someone else's life.
We are one of around 120 Centres who are all part of the Community Money Advice (CMA) network (https://www.communitymoneyadvice.com/) Each working to achieve the same goals across the UK.
CMA provide us with support and guidance and regular audits of our systems, training and an opportunity to meet one another at their annual conference. For more about them read their annual report on their website (https://www.communitymoneyadvice.com/set-up-a-service/how-you-can-help)

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
Start with a chat, not a search bar
Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What are we looking for?
No prior experience as a Trustee or in the financial services sector is necessary, but we are looking for someone with many of the following
- Significant volunteering or work experience at a managerial/decision-making level.
- Participation in charitable/not-for-profit organisations.
- Skills that may help the charity's activities, for example legal, fundraising, marketing, social media management, website design and so on
- Passionate about helping people get out of debt and find a brighter future
Although you will not work with our clients directly you need an empathy and understanding of the situations which lead them to seek debt advice - our clients are individuals not just data to be processed, they are the reason we do this work
If this is your first trusteeship we will provide additional training and support in this.
It is unlikely any one person will have all the skills we have ticked but we hope in recruiting more than one trustee at this time we will be able to cover more of our requirements.
You may have read our description and felt inspired to get in touch but have a different skillset - please do not be put off - you may be just who we are looking for but we just don't know it yet.
What will you be doing?
Cambridge Money Advice Centre (MAC) changes lives by providing free, face to face debt advice to people struggling with unmanageable debt. Our volunteer Debt Advisers provide in-person, regulated debt advice that helps clients resolve complex personal debt situations. Many of those we help are unable to access other forms of debt advice which are now mainly available online or by phone. Our Debt Advisers work with our clients to find solutions which meet their needs – our clients other vulnerabilities mean that a simple one size fits all solution simply does not work. We are proud to offer advice for as long as it is required.

Our Debt Advisers are amazing, but we also need our Trustee Board who work closely with the Centre Manager and the volunteer advisers to provide this amazing service. As a small charity we all work closely together. We are looking for Trustees who will be very hands on and willing to take on tasks such as writing fundraising requests or copy for our website and to be able to guide us through the sometimes very detailed requirements of the work.
Our board already has Debt Advisers and a Treasurer, we are looking for trustees interested in supporting other areas such as fundraising, social media, website and to be the lead in safeguarding or health and safety for example.
A full overview of MAC’s activities is given in its annual report which is available on our website (https://www.cambridgemoneyadvicecentre.org.uk/who-are-we)
Responsibilities
MAC is seeking additional Trustees to join its Board which is responsible for the charity’s strategic direction and governance.
- Attend quarterly trustee meetings, normally in person at MAC’s office in Cambridge
- With other trustees, contribute to the good governance of MAC which includes contributing to policies, strategic direction fundraising and operational matters
- Supporting specific tasks, e.g. review the budget, edit communications or prepare a report – depending on the task the time commitment varies but we estimate on average a day a month would be reasonable, sometimes it will take more.
- Take a lead in the area you are responsible for e.g. Fundraising, Safeguarding or Health and Safety - each trustee oversees at least one area but they work as a team to achieve goals
“It took my CV and asked me questions relevant to understanding what kind of jobs to suggest for me. Suggestions were almost perfect. Jobs were exactly what I’ve been looking for.”
