Fort Amherst Limited supports the work of Fort Amherst Heritage Trust, a charity and visitor attraction based in Chatham, Kent. The organization is dedicated to preserving and promoting the historic Fort Amherst site while providing engaging experiences for visitors and the local community. As a heritage-focused charity, it relies on strong governance, community partnerships, and sustainable operations to protect and share this important cultural asset. Individuals joining as Trustees will contribute to the long-term stewardship and strategic direction of the organization.
Role Description
As a volunteer Trustee, you will help oversee the governance, strategy, and sustainability of Fort Amherst Heritage Trust. You will participate in regular board meetings, review performance and financial reports, and contribute to policy and decision-making that supports the charity’s mission and visitor experience. Day-to-day, you will work closely with fellow Trustees and senior staff to provide guidance on operations, risk management, and compliance with relevant regulations and charity governance standards. You may also represent the organization at community events, support fundraising and stakeholder engagement, and help build partnerships that enhance heritage conservation and public access. This role involves active involvement in key projects and initiatives, ensuring decisions align with the charity’s values, legal responsibilities, and long-term objectives.

- Demonstrated experience in governance, leadership, or serving on boards or committees, with an understanding of charity or non-profit oversight.
- Financial literacy and the ability to review budgets, accounts, and reports, supporting sound financial planning and risk management.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills to work effectively with other Trustees, staff, volunteers, and external stakeholders.
- Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities, with capacity to contribute to long-term planning, decision-making, and policy development.
- Commitment to heritage, culture, or community-focused initiatives, with an interest in visitor attractions, education, or public engagement.
- Integrity, independence of judgment, and a willingness to accept collective responsibility for board decisions and regulatory compliance.
- Availability to attend regular on-site meetings in Chatham and participate actively in Trustee duties and key organizational events.
- Previous experience in areas such as fundraising, marketing, legal, HR, facilities management, or heritage conservation is advantageous but not essential.
