We are seeking a UK-based trustee with experience in governance and/or UK charity law to help guide our organisation and shape the future of our international charity supporting people living with axial spondyloarthritis worldwide.
What difference will you make?
As a governance expert, you will bring much-needed clarity to a diverse and very international trustee board. You will work closely with the Chair and the Director of Operations to ensure that the organisation can continue to carry out its amazing work.
Because ASIF's trustee board is fully international, there is a need to bring some expertise and knowledge of UK charity governance, law, and best practice to help trustees to better understand their role and to support and enable them in their decision-making.
If you have legal expertise, so much the better. ASIF is embarking on leadership of major projects which will necessitate more complex contracts where internal advice would be very welcome.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

What will you be doing?
As the Governance/Legal Trustee, you will contribute to the effective governance and strategic leadership of ASIF and ensure the organisation acts within legal and best practice frameworks, charity law, and ensure we adhere to our constitution. You will advise on compliance and promote high standards of governance, contribute to the development of organisational strategy, policies, and procedures, and advise on risk management.
Our trustee board is fully international and remote and currently all 11 trustees represent member organisations. Having re-registered as a CIO in 2023, the charity is undergoing an amount of change which requires ongoing management and there is a need to do some groundwork to ensure policies are in place to support our work. You will work closely with the Chair, the Finance & General Purposes Committee, and the Director of Operations to ensure that the foundations of the organisation are developed that will enable both trustees and staff to carry out their respective roles.

We are currently seeking someone with both governance and UK charity law expertise. However, if your expertise is in one or other, and you are interested in the role, please do get in touch.
Our trustees and staff are the backbone of the international community. We hold a Council Meeting every 2 years somewhere in the world, this year it will be in Athens in October. The role is fully remote, however, there is the occasional opportunity for international travel.
