Trustees for sailing disability charity - Volunteer
Peterborough Sailability enables people with disabilities to experience the freedom, challenge, and wellbeing benefits of sailing.
We are seeking two new trustees, one with a legal background and another with knowledge of and links to our local community and / or local businesses.
What difference will you make?
At its heart, we are here to help put a smile on the faces of our disabled clients. Trustees support our volunteers to deliver a fantastic sailing programme to our clients and their carers, while having fun, making new friends, and learning new skills themselves.
For our sailors, the impact is life-changing. Jackie, one of our long-standing members, shares her experience
“I only leave the house twice a week – once to a social group, and once to Sailability. Sailing gives me an incredible experience where I am actually able to do something. I can see wildlife from the boat, feel the wind in the sails, and enjoy being outdoors – it is the only fun thing I do outside my home. Without the volunteers’ help, I simply couldn’t take part. My condition (MS) means I can move none of my limbs, yet I can still go sailing. When I tell people, they are amazed – and so am I.”

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

We run sailing sessions from 10am to 4pm every Tuesday and Thursday from Easter until the end of October.
Since launching in 2006, we have grown into one of the region’s leading inclusive sailing programmes. We are affiliated to the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and proud recipients of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, the charity goes from strength to strength. Each year, we deliver more than 3,000 sailing sessions, supporting over 200 disabled sailors with the help of 60 active volunteers.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for a qualified lawyer who will bring a legal way of thinking to our board discussions.
We are also looking for someone with experience of and links to local businesses and / or community organisations.
For both roles, previous experience on trustee boards is not essential
In both cases, an empathy with people with learning disabilities is essential.
One of our core values is having fun! Whatever our role, we ensure we have fun together and enjoy what we do.
What will you be doing?
Our friendly, professionally-run Board of Trustees ensures that Peterborough Sailability is run safely and legally, with a focus on strategy, performance, and assurance.

Our trustees work together to make sure we manage money well, follow our policies and relevant legislation, act as custodians of our boats and equipment, manage risks and help the charity to operate well, today and in the future.
Our lawyer trustee has recently retired and we are looking for an individual with a legal background to take his place. It is more important to bring a legal way of thinking, analysing and questioning than to have any particular legal specialism. In the past, our lawyer trustee has been involved in issues around safeguarding, contracts and public liability, for example.
We are also seeking another individual with a professional background in business and / or the local community as we look to strengthen our links with local businesses and not for profit organisations. These links are important to us in providing funding for boats and equipment, and volunteers to assist with our sailing operations.
You don’t need to be a sailor — just someone who cares about improving the lives of people living with disabilities.
“It took my CV and asked me questions relevant to understanding what kind of jobs to suggest for me. Suggestions were almost perfect. Jobs were exactly what I’ve been looking for.”
