Tunnelling Engineer

Tunnel Engineer – UK Tunnelling Team

About Arup

Arup’s purpose, shared values, and collaborative approach have set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

You will be joining Arup’s UK Tunnelling team, working across infrastructure, energy, and underground engineering projects. Our team applies advanced analysis techniques alongside practical design, construction, and operational experience to support clients through each stage of the project lifecycle—from planning and feasibility to delivery, operation, refurbishment, and upgrades of tunnel infrastructure.

The UK tunnelling team operates as one integrated team with hubs in Birmingham, London, and Manchester/Leeds, collaborating closely with geotechnical and structural engineering colleagues. You will be based in our modern, collaborative Birmingham office.

The Opportunity

We are expanding our tunnelling capability to meet growing demand across the infrastructure and energy sectors, including:

  • Rail and highway tunnels
  • Water and waste infrastructure
  • Mining
  • Carbon capture and storage
  • Renewable energy (including hydropower and micro-tunnelling)
  • Trenchless technologies

We are seeking a Tunnel Engineer to contribute to the design and delivery of tunnel and underground projects across the UK and internationally. In this role, you will:

  • Support the development of technically robust and sustainable tunnelling solutions, working with methodologies such as:
    • TBM (Tunnel Boring Machines)
    • Sprayed Concrete Lining (SCL)
    • Micro-tunnelling
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and apply relevant design standards, codes (e.g., Eurocodes, BTS, ACI), and analytical tools.
  • Produce high-quality technical outputs, including reports and design documentation.
  • Assess projects at different lifecycle stages and deliver short-term project assignments both domestically and overseas.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
