MPI Mechanical (Watchkeeper) Technician
MPI have a requirement for a Mechanical (Watchkeeper) Technician to work on site at Aberporth, Cardigan, Wales SA43 2DZ. The contract is until March 2027. This role is out of scope of IR35. Rate of pay is £42.00 per hour LTD/£31.40 per hour PAYE. Tools provided.
Please note, will be required to provide 3 years References for Security Clearance.
Basic 37 hours (9 days a fortnight)
- Week 1 = Monday – Thursday 8.25hrs & Fri 8hrs
- Week 2 = Monday – Thursday 8.25 hrs
Responsibilities
As Mechanical Technician you will be responsible for:
- Maintenance of mechanical components of a UAV system
- Preparation of airfield for launch and recovery of UAV
- Launch and recovery actions associated with aircraft movements on an airfield
- Pre and post flight routine checks on the components of a UAV system
- Instructing new or less experienced maintainers and flight line operators
The Mechanical Technician will prepare UAV systems for flight, maintenance, troubleshoot and rectify UAV, GCS and Ground Element mechanical systems including engine, airframe and controls and to operate as a flight line technician in the flight team.
Duties and Tasks
- Perform mission launch and recovery including:
- Assembly/disassembly launch and recovery of UAV at airfield
- UAV Handling, cleaning, visual inspection, fuel and oil replenishment
- Preparation of runway strip for UAV take off and recovery
- UAV towing and airstrip activities
- Perform Engine start and engine checks
- Perform pre-flight check via Flight Line Support Command Unit (FLSCU)
- Perform UAV post flight handling activities
- UAV Maintenance including:
- Troubleshooting via FLSCU
- Perform mechanical tests using Test Equipment
- Perform servicing of generators, batteries and air conditioning of the ground system
- Perform Engine servicing, run-up and adjustments
- Perform minor structural repairs
- Routine maintenance of Ground Support Equipment (GSE)
- Replacement of faulty Line Replaceable Units (LRU)
- Engine Maintenance including:
- Routine servicing
- Removal and replacement of engine
- Fuel and oil system
- Aircraft F700 and documentation management
- Undertake maintenance procedures, as defined within the technical publications
- Monitor and update the GOLD Esp LIS as required for the equipment being maintained

Person Specification
The Mechanical Technician will develop and manage effective relationships across the breadth of the company and its customers and have the confidence to technically lead cross discipline project teams.
The successful candidate will be expected to bring maturity and credibility when engaging with customers, senior managers and stakeholders. We expect the incoming Mechanical Technician to be able to demonstrate the following skills and capabilities:
Skills
- Ability to work within defined compliance and processing structures
- Clear and concise communication skills
- Effective stakeholder management skills
- Good team working skills and ability to motivate effectively
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office packages
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work to high levels of accuracy
- Strong organisational skills
Knowledge
- A profound understanding of F700 Series and the use of Aircraft Data Sets
- An understanding of GOLDesp and RESOLVE management tools would be desirable
- An understanding of airfield, flight line and runway operations
- Attainment of ‘signatory authorisations’ within the MAA authorisation structure
- Demonstrable experience in a similar role within a military or civilian aviation discipline, preferable aerospace
- Knowledge of mechanical first- and second-line maintenance

If no Watchkeeper experience or a refresher is required, a 2-week Training Course is provided at Larkhill.
