UK Operational Training Team Leader
Job Description:
The UK Operational Training Team Leader is responsible for leading and coordinating the delivery of UK resilience and support contracts, ensuring high-quality training, operational support, and client engagement across a range of specialist capabilities. This includes supporting wildfire preparedness, training Operational Resilience Teams at operational and strategic levels, and overseeing the delivery of specialist courses such as Road Traffic Collision Instructor.
The role provides professional teaching, subject matter expertise, resource coordination, and day-to-day leadership across assigned programmes and work streams, while fostering a culture of excellence, safety, continuous improvement, and customer focus.
Responsibilities:
- Lead, manage, and deliver UK resilience and support contracts, ensuring effective training, operational support, and client-focused delivery across all relevant programmes.
- Provide a professional teaching capability to support learning and development across UK resilience, operational resilience, wildfire, and specialist technical training courses, including managing specific work streams as allocated by the Head of Delivery.
- Coordinate the allocation of staff and resources to programmes and courses within the scope of the role.
- Undertake duties as Subject Manager, Course Director, and Subject Matter Expert (SME), supporting the delivery of training at various levels, and liaising closely with Sales and Marketing, Curriculum Design, and other delivery teams at the Fire Service College (FSC).
- Deliver existing FSC training products, lead course delivery within your area, support other subject managers, develop competences in additional subject areas as needed, and deliver both on-site and off-site within the UK and internationally.
- Develop new training products, acting as SME for UK resilience, wildfire, Operational Resilience Team training, and specialist courses such as Road Traffic Collision Instructor; gather market intelligence and engage with clients to provide advice, support, and future development opportunities.
- Plan and implement activities to meet business needs in line with FSC aims and the business plan, manage delegated tasks, and brief management of progress and potential risks.
About You
Essential Criteria:
- Substantial operational fire and rescue service experience, with a proven track record in training design, delivery, and development across resilience, operational response, or specialist technical training.
- Detailed understanding of UK fire and rescue service operational resilience, including the requirements of operational and strategic level training, exercising, and multi-agency preparedness.
- Road Traffic Collision Instructor.
- Demonstrable leadership and team management skills, with previous people management experience within a local authority fire and rescue service environment.
- Knowledge of current fire service training standards, regulations, and best practices.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire others.

Desirable Criteria:
- Relevant teaching or training qualification (e.g., Certificate in Training and Development, Level 3 Award in Education and Training, or equivalent).
- Experience managing projects or programmes within emergency services.
- Awareness of current developments in fire safety and prevention.
- First aid or trauma care qualification.

The Fire Service College (FSC) is a world-renowned further education training college that provides a range of resilience focused courses and programmes ranging from apprenticeships to fully accredited qualifications. On a 300-acre site FSC provides both practical and classroom-based learning in addition to remote/customer site delivered courses. FSC courses and programmes are accredited with SFJ Awards, Highfields, Institution for Fire Engineers, FireQual, Lantra, JOIFF, and Proboard/NFPA. Customers range from fire and rescue services, police forces, ambulance services, the military, various commercial organisations to individuals who wish to further their careers. FSC attracts learners from international fire and rescue services from the Middle East and across Europe.
