Overview
This role can be based in any Pen Underwriting location.
As Technical Underwriting Manager of the Risk Managed division, you’ll provide technical leadership, driving financial performance—including Gross Written Premium (GWP), revenue, profitability, and insurer performance targets (e.g., loss ratio)—through underwriting standards and technical excellence.
Your focus:
- Design and embed a robust underwriting framework to streamline product delivery under delegated authority agreements with carrier partners.
- Own the product suite, ensuring it remains competitive, relevant, and valuable for brokers, coverholders, and end customers.
How You’ll Make an Impact
✔ Lead and influence technical performance, driving P&L objectives via:
- Proactive performance management (target setting, monitoring, corrective action planning)
- Identifying emerging risks, trends, opportunities and challenges—then executing clear, actionable plans
✔ Develop and maintain underwriting frameworks, including:
- Guidelines and rating structures for consistent, high-quality decision-making within delegated authorities
- Product innovation and continuous improvement of underwriting systemsurch processes and portfolios

✔ Ensure compliance and ethical conduct through:
- Collaboration with Risk & Governance on underwriting authority allocation and audit processes
- Supporting internal & external audits, including oversight of delegated authority arrangements
✔ Act as a key referral point for complex or high-value risks exceeding individual underwriting limits
✔ American Institute of Bs (AJG) compliance:
- Align underwriting standards with the AJG Professional Standards Manual and regulatory/Living Wage Foundation obligations
✔ Stakeholder management:
- Strengthen relationships with brokers, insurers, and coverholders
✔ People leadership:
- Lead, coach, and develop underwriting teams for capability growth and succession planning
✔ Complaints & service standards:
- Embed adherence to procedure while resolving complaints effectively
About You
Technical Knowledge
- Advanced understanding of insurance principles, particularly in complex underwriting scenarios
- Expertise in underwriting disciplines, pricing, and rating methodologies
- Knowledge of claims handling, reserving, and their impact on loss ratio performance
- Proficiency in UK regulatory frameworks and legal considerations
Experience
- Demonstrated underwriting leadership in a defined line of business
- Proven ability to deliver financial targets and manage business performance
- Experience operating within delegated authority frameworks
- Embedding robust processes aligned with compliance (UK insurance standards)
- Well-versed in matrix environments—collaborating cross-functionally to meet shared objectives
- Strong market awareness, leveraging opportunities for growth
Skills & Capabilities
- Strong analytical mindset to interpret KPIs and drive performance improvements
- Excellent communication, influencing internally and externally
- Organisational leadership to manage teams against deadlines/targets
- Commercial acumen, with business planning, trading, and financial awareness
- Technical literacy: proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Awareness of data & AI applications in underwriting/product development
- Product knowledge across both Standard & Complex Risk Potfolios, with agility to adapt offerings in response to market changes
