Current placement student's comments
A typical day in my role involves working with a range of AI tools to support digital services across the Council. I help design and test AI use cases, build and improve SharePoint pages, and support demonstrations and presentations to different teams, giving exposure to real projects and how technology is used in a local government environment.
Before starting my placement, I was worried that I wouldn’t have the skills or capability to carry out the work expected of me. However, I quickly realised that as a placement student, I’m here to learn. Speaking to colleagues across the Council helped build my confidence, as everyone was supportive and open to questions. Over time, the more work I took on, the more confident and capable I became.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
During my placement, I’ve developed strong Microsoft 365 development skills in SharePoint and Microsoft Copilot, alongside a better understanding of AI in the workplace. I’ve also improved my teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills and gained confidence in delivering presentations, asking questions, and sharing ideas and supporting different teams.
The best part of my placement has been working with different teams and seeing how they operate. Being involved in live projects has allowed me to build on my technical skills while also understanding how decisions are made and how services are delivered in a council environment. I would strongly encourage other students to apply for a placement at RMBC. The environment is welcoming and supportive, and there is a genuine focus on helping you learn, develop and build confidence while gaining valuable professional experience.
