The Role & Your Responsibilities

The Undergraduate Industrial Placement Materials Scientist will contribute to the Global Respiratory Group at Viatris, aiding in the development of life-saving respiratory medicines. This 12-month placement provides invaluable laboratory experience in an industry-leading environment, honing key skills for a career in materials science or pharmacological analytics.

Key Duties:

  • Conduct analytical activities critical for clinical studies and commercialisation of respiratory products.
  • Execute experiments to develop analytical methods, formulations, and processes, generating scientific insights.
  • Perform analyses for stability testing, clinical supplies, and process scale-up.
  • Process data: Identify suspicious or aberrant results and collaboratively troubleshoot findings.
  • Maintain laboratory documentation complying with good documentation practices.
  • Support and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation.
  • Contribute to project delivery through additional tasks, including lab housekeeping, sample ordering, and shipping.

About Your Skills & Qualifications

Essential Requirements:

  • Registered on an undergraduate degree in chemistry or pharmaceutical sciences (with at least 2 years completed).
  • Basic knowledge of analytical chemistry principles.
  • Strong IT proficiencies: Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Proven ability to organise tasks independently, produce high-quality results on time, and follow established analytical methods.
  • Enthusiasm for laboratory-based scientific work and willingness to embrace technical training.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Desirable Skills (not required but advantageous):

  • Familiarity with modern analytical techniques, including:
    • Particle sizing
    • FT-IR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy)
    • SEM (Scanning electron microscopy)
    • Thermal analysis
  • Experience/knowledge in inhalation product development and testing.
  • Skilled in physical properties analysis (e.g., particle size, surface area, amorphous content measurement).
  • Understanding of laboratory safety protocols and good manufacturing practices (cGMP).
