Underwriter
Underwriter – Bridging Finance Salary from £50k + Comms (negotiable)
About Somo An award-winning specialist bridging and business finance company. Founded in 2014, Somo provides fast, flexible short-term finance secured against UK property. Our mission is simple: to make alternative finance as easy to access as a high street loan - but far more flexible. We specialise in helping landlords, property professionals and UK businesses access the funding they need, when they need it. Behind it all is a collaborative team with over 400 years of combined experience and a shared belief that finance shouldn’t be complicated.
The Role Opportunities like this do not come around often. This is a rare chance to join a well-established, growing business with an exciting future ahead. As an Underwriter at Somo, you will join our experienced underwriting team and play a key role in assessing cases on their individual merits. You will be heavily supported by your own Case Manager while also working directly with the Underwriting Director to help drive cases through to completion. You will manage your own allocated cases, review applications, assess risk and deliver clear underwriting decisions in line with lending criteria and internal processes. You will also work closely with introducers and brokers, using your knowledge and relationship skills to manage expectations, provide guidance and become a trusted advisor. This role is ideal for someone with strong underwriting experience within financial services, particularly within bridging finance, short-term lending, secured loans or buy-to-let. You will be joining a supportive team where you will be empowered to make decisions, build relationships and contribute directly to the continued growth of the business.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
