Underwriter - Credit & Political Risk
Political & Credit Underwriting Specialist

The Role
To carefully select and underwrite Political & Credit Risk policies in a cost-effective manner, adhering to granted authority levels, ensuring profitability and achieving business targets.
Key Accountabilities
- Lead the underwriting of Political & Credit Risk portfolio while maintaining high standards across new business and renewals.
- Document and justify underwriting decisions and rationale to maintain a record of why risks were accepted, completing all associated tools for data capture.
- Build long-term, profitable relationships with brokers and clients, delivering excellent customer service.
- Represent HDI at client meetings and insurance conferences.
- Deliver presentations to brokers and clients as required.
- Review and assess wordings and underwriting criteria in collaboration with Legal & Compliance.
- Pricing and risk assessment:
- Determine appropriate premiums by evaluating risk information, pricing models, and statistical data.
- Exercise underwriting authority within established limits and escalate referrals as needed.
- Prepare internal reporting for stakeholders.
- Support special and branch-wide underwriting projects, fostering collaboration across HDI Global Specialty Group.
- Act as a subject matter expert for Political & Credit Risk, providing guidance on:
- Coverage interpretation
- Risk selection
- Market trends
- Communicate risk appetite and HDI value proposition to external market participants.

Skills & Experience
- Specialist experience in credit and political risk markets, gained within:
- Insurers, brokers, banks, or other financial institutions.
- Strong credit analysis capabilities:
- Assess obligor creditworthiness.
- Interpret financial statements.
- Evaluate transaction structures and key risk drivers.
- Ability to make disciplined, evidence-based decisions and articulate clear recommendations.
- Deep understanding of:
- Political and economic risks.
- Sovereign default risk.
- Market-driven credit exposures.
- Proven relationship management with brokers, clients, lenders, or syndicate partners.
- Experience with:
- Credit documentation.
- Illicit insurance wordings.
- Transferable expertise in legal, credit, or structured finance documentation.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to collaborate across internal and external stakeholders.
