Within this role, you’ll efficiently underwrite new business applications for life, critical illness, and income protection insurance, making decisions on appropriate terms based on risk. Previous experience of underwriting at least one of these products is essential.
This role is offered on a permanent basis with fantastic opportunities for growth and development. The position is based at our Exeter office, with potential for occasional travel.
Who You Are
Our ideal candidate will:
- Be an experienced underwriting professional with a strong understanding of life, critical illness, and income protection products.
- Demonstrate strong proofreading skills and a keen eye for detail.
- Be a knowledgeable decision-maker with a passion for delivering excellent customer experiences.
- Show strong administration and organisational skills.
- Maintain awareness of the wider market and competitor products.
- Be proficient in using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Be an excellent communicator, delivering information clearly with patience and empathy.
- Independently manage workload while supporting colleagues to achieve mutual goals.

- Underwriting high-value applications
- Post-issue sampling
- Supporting claims with retrospective opinions (desirable)
Key Responsibilities
- Assessing new business applications and making underwriting decisions (within risk appetite and underwriting philosophy).
- Providing fair, balanced decisions with appropriate justification where required.
- Referring cases to third parties, including Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and reassurers.
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with colleagues, customers, and intermediaries.
- Contributing to continuous process improvement and ensuring Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are met.
- Suggesting customer journey enhancements.
- Driving Continuing Professional Development (CPD) through self-education, training seminars, and industry events.
- Providing coaching, support, and feedback to team members, including quality checks, in a respectful manner.
- Participating in business change projects and testing.
- Investing in the development of underwriting rules and claims best practices through analysis of management information (MI).
- Representing LV= in product initiatives and service improvements.
