If you're looking to start with an underwriting career, or move forward in your current fledgling underwriting career, into a role that gives you exposure to how underwriting is done within complex commercial property and casualty insurance risks, this is an opportunity with real long-term value.
You will work alongside experienced underwriters in Manchester, managing the processing of the risks on their behalf. Those risks will generally be large, complex businesses with technical nuances, therefore expect your learning curve to enhance significantly.
The key function of the role is to provide administrative support to the underwriters, but if desired, the role offers a credible medium-term route into underwriting, with structured development, support towards professional qualifications and the chance to take on more responsibility as your technical knowledge grows.
The opportunity of Underwriting Assistant
Starting in a junior underwriting assistant position, you will be closely involved in the day-to-day administrative management of the office portfolio, supporting the processing of new business and renewals, and onto speaking with brokers and helping ensure each risk is handled accurately and efficiently.
It will suit someone who wants to understand first hand how underwriting decisions are made and build the technical foundations for a successful career in commercial insurance. You will be trained by individuals with several years of experience within this role, as they move into formal Underwriting functions - plenty of hand-holding to begin with while you learn the ropes.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
