About the Role
At Markel, insurance is about helping people and businesses move forward with confidence. We’re refining our underwriting function and creating a dynamic opportunity for an ambitious professional to join our newly formed Underwriting Enablement Team as an Underwriting & Governance Analyst with a leading role.
This isn’t a traditional governance position—you’ll need to balance hands-on technical underwriting with governance leadership, stakeholder management, and team development. You’ll outline the future of this critical function while building processes, mentoring others, and shaping how underwriting operates at Markel UK.
The Opportunity
Directly reporting to the Underwriting Director, you’ll collaborate with senior leadership to ensure strong governance, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence across the business:
- Maintain the frameworks and controls that drive effective underwriting operations.
- Lead and develop a newly established team to support Product, Pricing, and Underwriting leaders.
- Gain broad visibility across the business while shaping this function’s trajectory and helping foster visibility and growth for key skill sets.
This role demands vision, initiative, and the ability to bridge gaps between governance, underwriting teams, senior leaders, and broader business demands.
Responsibilities
Technical Underwriting & Governance
- Maintain high underwriting governance standards.
- Review and approve non-standard endorsements.
- Oversee underwriting controls, delegated authorities, and governance processes.
- Monitor compliance with underwriting guidelines and legal/regulatory changes.
- Analyze underwriting data and comprehensive governance reporting.
- Partner with Product Line Leaders and senior stakeholders on critical projects.
- Serve as the key governance contact for queries and technical underwriting issues.
Team Leadership
- Lead, coach, and develop the Underwriting Enablement Team.
- Foster performance management, accountability, and workload prioritization.
- Design Process and Operating models for a new function.
- Mentor team members by offering structured complimentary underwriting and team growth support.
- Foster development in a rapidly emerging business area.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
