Underwriting & Governance Analyst

Underwriting & Governance Analyst (Underwriting Enablement Team Lead)

Locations: Leeds (Preferred) | Manchester | Birmingham

Working Arrangement: Hybrid – 3 days in the office, 2 days from home

About the Role

At Markel, we believe insurance is more than policies and paperwork—it’s about empowering people and businesses to move forward with confidence. As we redefine our underwriting function, we’re creating a dynamic role for an ambitious professional to join the newly established Underwriting Enablement Team.

This isn’t a conventional governance position. You’ll wear multiple hats—technical underwriting expert, governance lead, stakeholder manager, and team developer. This unique opportunity blends governance expertise, technical underwriting support, and people leadership in a player-coach style role.

If you’re seeking a position where you can drive underwriting operations, refine processes, develop talent, and collaborate with senior underwriting leaders, this could be your next career move.

The Opportunity

Directly reporting to the Underwriting Director, you’ll support the wider leadership team by ensuring rigorous governance, regulatory compliance, underwriting controls, and operational excellence across the business.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Maintaining robust underwriting frameworks that underpin the function’s effectiveness
  • Leading and developing the newly formed Underwriting Enablement Team, which supports Product, Pricing, and Underwriting teams
  • Shaping the future direction of the team as it grows and evolves

What You’ll Be Doing

Technical Underwriting & Governance

  • Maintain underwriting governance standards across the business
  • Review and approve non-standard endorsements
  • Support underwriting controls, delegated authorities, and governance processes
  • Monitor adherence to underwriting guidelines and regulatory protocols
  • Implement legal and regulatory changes
  • Conduct underwriting data analysis and governance reporting
  • Collaborate with Product Line Leaders and senior stakeholders
  • Support governance, reinsurance, and operational projects aligned with profitability and regulatory goals
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for governance queries and technical underwriting support

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
