Underwriting Manager - Contingency, Media & Entertainment

Location: London, UK

Division: Sports, Media & Entertainment (UK & Lloyd’s)

Within Sports Media and Entertainment, we are looking to grow our portfolio to continue expanding under current and future market conditions. The strong AXA brand presents significant global opportunities, and a strengthened team can capitalise on these. Our profitable portfolio spans a broad range of risks written across Lloyd’s & Company platforms, covering Delegated Authority, Facility & Open Market business. As Underwriting Manager, you will drive strategic growth, maintain brand visibility, and leverage cross-sell opportunities while ensuring compliance under the Central Bank of Ireland’s Fitness and Probity regime.


About the Role

You will lead contingency, media & entertainment underwriting with broad technical expertise. Key Responsibilities

Underwriting & Portfolio Management

  • Underwrite high-profile and complex UK/Global accounts, adhering to underwriting guidelines, authorities, processes, and strategy.
  • Support and manage underwriting operations within the Sports, Media & Entertainment portfolio, including:
    • New business production
    • Portfolio profitability management (volatility management, technical rate strength, account pricing).
  • Oversee submissions (including enquiries, NBIs, coverage negotiations, and policy wording).

Relationship & Business Development

  • Lead and develop relationships with brokers, clients, reinsurers, and market players to generate targeted business.
  • Act as the senior contact point for insureds and brokers, ensuring strategic growth aligned with company objectives.
  • Represent AXA XL externally at events/meetings, promoting brand values and capabilities globally.

Team Leadership & Mentorship

  • Lead, develop, and manage a team of underwriters, acting as a referral point for technical guidance.
  • Mentor junior colleagues, sharing underwriting principles, procedures, and controls.
  • Ensure ongoing client satisfaction while reinforcing AXA XL’s proactive brand leadership.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Support cross-sell objectives, collaborating with colleagues across lines of business.
  • Work with internal teams (Finance, Claims, Operations) to enhance processes and efficiency.

Risk & Reinsurance Oversight

  • Assist in reinsurance placements to optimise risk distribution.
  • Assist in underwriting presentations to ensure compliance with established guidelines and frameworks.

Strategic Initiatives & Reports

  • Support business reporting, performance analysis, market research, and in-depth studies.
  • Assist in implementing underwriting governance frameworks.
  • Contribute to committees and subject-matter expert groups, facilitating constructive discussions.

Requirements

Essential Experience:

  • Significant background in technical underwriting and broker relationship development.
  • Proven team leadership experience in a structured Underwriting environment aligned with AXA XL’s corporate values.
  • Portfolio management capabilities, with experience achieving profitability under fluctuating market conditions.
  • Fluency in underwriting systems and analytics tools.
  • Exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills, with a meticulous work ethic.
  • Ability to adapt to change with agility and drive innovation in underwriting practices.
  • Strong public-speaking and networking skills, with practical experience at client-facing events.
  • Native or fluent in English and the ability to communicate in writing at native speaker level.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and ACII (or equivalent underwriting credentials).
  • For Lloyd’s-related roles, **}${Professional qualifications related to Casework Certificates or relevant ATP Underwriting exams.
