Senior Underwriting Manager

You will lead underwriting delivery within your business area, driving strong portfolio performance, technical excellence and profitable growth. This is a key leadership role where you will develop underwriting capability while ensuring disciplined, high-quality decision-making aligned to strategy.


Location & Working Pattern

This role is based in our London office, with a hybrid working model (expectation to attend office 2-3 days per week).

About the Role

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor account and portfolio performance, identifying under- and over-performance and implementing corrective actions
  • Deliver KPI targets across complex cases and portfolios, aligned to business strategy
  • Apply underwriting authority with a clear understanding of P&L impact and portfolio performance
  • Make key commercial decisions to support proitable growth and strengthen distribution relationships
  • Support business development aligned to distribution segmentation strategy
  • Conduct underwriting inspections, account control and quality reviews where required
  • Produce and deliver technical training, mentoring and coaching to underwriting teams
  • Partner with Head Office and training teams to design and deliver technical capability frameworks
  • Collaborate with Sales, Distribution, Pricing, Claims and Operations to support delivery
  • Represent Allianz in internal & external forums, engaging key stakeholders
  • Lead, motivate and develop a team of underwriters to drive strong results & high engagement

Essential Qualifications & Skills

  • Strong technical expertise in:
    • Policy wordings, clauses and non-standard cover
    • Risk assessment, pricing and terms
    • Claims drivers and mitigation strategies
    • Underwriting governance, legislation and regulatory frameworks
  • Ability to interpret statistical data, identify trends and leverage opportunities
  • Knowledge of reinsurance principles (treati and facultative arrangements)
  • Strong commercial acumen and experience in portfolio/account management
  • Proven leadership in managing or developing underwriting teams
  • Exceptional communication & stakeholder engagement

Desirable Qualifications & Skills

  • ACII qualification or equivalent industry experience
  • Modules completed in underwriting academies (or similar professional development)
  • Experience in project/change delivery within underwriting
  • Contribution to product development or segmentation initiatives
  • Demonstrated track record in delivering under challenging objectives
