Leadership Role in Underwriting
This is an exciting opportunity to lead underwriting delivery within your business area, driving strong portfolio performance, technical excellence, and profitable growth.
Your role will focus on developing underwriting capabilities while maintaining disciplined, high-quality decision-making aligned to the wider strategy.
Location & Working Pattern
This position is based at our Chelmsford office. The role will operate on a hybrid basis, with an expectation to attend the office 2-3 days per week.

Pay is dependent on experience, skills, and location and forms part of our total reward package.
About the Role
As part of Allianz, you will be responsible for:
- Monitoring account and portfolio performance, identifying under and overheperformance and implementing appropriate actions
- Delivering KPI targets across complex cases and portfolios, aligned to the line of business strategy
- Applying underwriting authority with a clear understanding of profit and loss (P&L) impact and portfolio performance
- Making key commercial decisions to support profitable growth and strengthen distribution relationships
- Supporting business development in line with distribution segmentation strategy
- Conducting underwriting inspections, account control, and quality review activity where required
- Producing and delivering technical training, mentoring, and coaching to underwriting teams
- Partnering with Head Office and training teams to design and deliver technical capability frameworks
- Collaborating with Sales, Distribution, Pricing, Claims, and Operations to support delivery and performance
- Representing Allianz in internal and external forums, engaging with key stakeholders
- Leading, motivating, and developing a team of underwriters to deliver strong results and high engagement

Essential Skills & Experience
You will bring:
- Strong technical underwriting expertise, including policy wordings, clauses, and non-standard cover
- Ability to assess risk, pricing, and terms, applying risk management principles effectively
- Understanding of claims drivers and mitigation strategies
- Strong knowledge of underwriting governance, legislation, and regulatory frameworks
- Ability to interpret statistical and performance data to identify trends and opportunities
- Understanding of reinsurance principles, including treaty and facultative arrangements
- Strong commercial acumen and portfolio management principles
- Proven leadership capability, with experience managing or developing underwriting teams
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Ability to balance technical excellence with business performance and growth objectives
Desirable Skills & Advantages
Additional strengths include:
- ACII qualification or equivalent industry experience
- Completion of Underwriting Academy modules or similar professional development
- Knowledge of project or change delivery within underwriting environments
- Experience contributing to product development or segmentation activity
- Strong track record of delivering against challenging objectives
- Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) usage
