Commercial Lines Mid-Market Portfolio Steering Team - Underwriting Portfolio Analyst

We currently have a great opportunity to work in our Commercial Lines Mid-Market Portfolio Steering team as an Underwriting Portfolio Analyst, with a particular focus on Construction, Engineering & Energy (CEE).

This role would be perfect for an ambitious underwriter or analyst with direct CEE or broader Commercial P&C experience, looking to be more involved in strategic activities, gain exposure to senior stakeholders, and looking to upskill in analytical capabilities or underwriting expertise.

You will contribute to the development, production, and analysis of data, using appropriate data feeds to create actionable business insight to the Account Teams, providing the greatest depth of analysis and insight to support portfolio decision making – and don’t worry if you don’t have this experience in Construction or Engineering, we will provide all the training you need. You just need an interest and willingness to learn this part of the role.

The Mid-Market Portfolio Steering team sits within the Commercial Technical department and closely works with the Underwriting Account teams, Underwriting branches, Pricing, Data, Claims, and Actuarial teams to provide recommendations and decisions to support the profitable management of the Mid-Market lines of business.

This is a hybrid role from our Guildford office.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
