Underwriting Team Leader
Primary purpose of position
The Underwriting Team Leader is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day performance, quality, and productivity of the underwriting team. This role ensures that all credit decisions are made in line with procedures and policies, regulatory frameworks, and risk appetite while maintaining excellent service levels for internal and external stakeholders. The team leader will provide coaching and technical expertise, acting as a key escalation point for any cases and supporting continuous improvement across underwriting processes.
Salary: £40,000 - £46,000 dependant on experience
Location: Home based but to be in the Coventry/Slough office twice a week
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Leadership & Team Management
- Provide leadership and oversight to the underwriting team, ensuring all activities align with the company’s commercial objectives and risk appetite.
- Manage, mentor, and develop team members, fostering a high-performance culture that encourages professional growth, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Track team performance against targets (KPIs) and manage workloads, ensuring efficient and effective work.
- Lead regular reviews of team performance, set clear objectives, and deliver constructive feedback to ensure personal and departmental targets are achieved.
- Provide consistent, hands-on support for all day-to-day team queries and operational tasks, ensuring these are handled promptly in line with business priorities.
- Conduct regular 1-2-1s, check-ins, and team meetings that truly engage and motivate.
Underwriting & Credit Decisioning
- Take day-to-day ownership and management of your own underwriting case load, ensuring timely, accurate, and commercially balanced decisions.
- Act as a senior point of escalation for complex or high-value cases, making informed decisions that balance risk management with commercial awareness.
- Oversee the review and approval of new customer proposals up to £100k.
- Ensures Head of Credit and other senior management stakeholders are aware of potential issues associated with underwriting risks that have been identified.
Operational Excellence & Continuous Improvement
- Drive the implementation of best-in-class underwriting practices, proactively identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency, profitability, and client satisfaction in a dynamic market environment.
- Actively participate in the evolution of our processes, contributing to working instruction updates, quality control, and change management initiatives.

Stakeholder Management
- Champion cross-functional collaboration with Sales and Operations, ensuring seamless client journeys and robust transfer processes between teams.
- Supporting the Head of Credit in third-party relationships with key suppliers including Experian, Equifax, CIFAS, GBG, etc.
Reporting & Management Information
- Responsible for Underwriting reporting – this includes any CIFAS reporting and reviewing the loading of cases, DAM 1 reporting, etc.
- Utilize performance data (Underwriting reviews, Monthly Stats) to identify key insights and drive targeted improvements.
- Responsible to prepare performance reports, insights, and challenges for senior management in bi-monthly Credit Committee.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Maintain the highest standards of compliance and operational integrity, ensuring all control measures, procedures, and approval authorities are meticulously followed.
Professional Development
- Actively pursue your own professional development, including achieving higher underwriting levels and upskilling into the Corporate Credit team.
Drivers of Success
- 1-2-1 general reviews with Head of Credit
- Team Productivity – deals underwritten in 30 minutes / per day / emails worked within SLA.
- Default rates per Underwriter to remain under 2%
- Achieve cost of risk within budget.
Job Deliverables

Required Knowledge and Skills
Foreign Language skills:
Education level, professional qualifications, vocational training:
Required experience:
- Office presence required in both Coventry and Slough once a week.
- Capability to lead and drive high performance with your team.
- Proven experience in asset finance underwriting / credit decisioning.
- Confident people leader – able to coach, motivate and set clear expectations.
- 5+ years of experience in an underwriting role.
- Good communication and Interpersonal skills.
- Experience in the automotive or consumer finance industry advantageous.
- Knowledge & Understanding in scorecard products such as PCCA, Hunter, and Crosscore.
Technical Skills and Personal characteristics:
- Leadership & Management - Ability to motivate, guide, and develop team members, providing regular feedback, training, and performance reviews.
- Performance Monitoring & Management - Setting targets/KPIs, tracking team performance metrics (e.g., recovery rates, delinquency percentages), and implementing improvement plans.
- Workflow & Resource Planning - Planning and prioritizing workloads, managing underwriting volumes and ensuring appropriate staffing levels.
- Strong relationship-builder, with a track record of working well with brokers, clients, and internal teams.
- Skilled in managing and organizing a team, including performance, workload, and priorities.
- Excellent time management in a fast-paced environment, balancing urgency with accuracy.
- Comfortable analyzing financial information and producing clear, practical credit summaries.
- Commercial judgement – able to weigh risk and return and sense-check proposals quickly.
- Strong understanding of security and collateral in asset finance deals.
- Professional, personable, and reliable – makes confident, well-informed decisions and stands by them.
- Consistently delivers high service standards, keeping brokers and clients supported from start to finish.
- Data Analysis & Reporting – Analysing underwriting data and performance reports to identify trends, pinpoint areas for improvement, and make data-driven decisions.
- Relationship Building – Building strong internal relationships with management, other departments (sales, sales support) and external stakeholders such as brokers/dealers.
- Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking - Ability to analyse complex situations, identify issues, and develop practical solutions under pressure.
- Ability to ensure high level of attention to detail to work and ability to operate at all levels in an organisation.
- Proficient IT skills and competent user in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
- Ability to work with large data on Excel and create pivot tables or charts desired.
