Unestablished Teaching Associate (Fixed Term)

The Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER) within the Institute for Technology & Humanity (ITH) seeks to appoint a Teaching Associate to support the new MPhil in Global Risk and Resilience

The MPhil in Global Risk and Resilience is a one-year taught Master's course, designed to provide students with a thorough grounding in the study of Global Risks, their management and mitigation and relevant Resilience approaches. The programme covers areas such as AI, Geopolitics and Nuclear Risks, Pandemics and Health Security, and Disaster Risk Studies. It draws on a variety of relevant disciplines such as Geography, Science and Technology Studies, Environmental Sciences, International Relations, Philosophy, and more. The role holder will work closely with the Course Directors and Postgraduate Coordinator to support all academic aspects of course delivery.

This role would suit someone interested in increasing their teaching experience, shaping a new postgraduate course, teaching and supervising broadly across multiple disciplines and methodologies relevant to global risks, and developing their own interests related to reducing global catastrophic risk.

Applicants are welcome from PhD-holders with a track record of interdisciplinary teaching, excellent communication skills and the potential to contribute to CSER's research output.

CSER produces world-leading research on risks that could lead to human extinction or civilisation collapse. It is also a hub for academics, technologists and policymakers, where the team is expected to work across theoretical and practical specialisms and to generate impact outside academic. Key Activities Associated With The Role Include

  • Support the organisation, planning and delivery of teaching and assessment
  • Supervise students for research essays and dissertations and act as assessor for a variety of assessments
  • Lead an elective module and contribute to core teaching
  • Participate in ongoing quality assurance review of course content and delivery, and develop course content, teaching approaches and assessment strategies in response to these reviews
  • Play an active role in the life and work of CSER

Applicants Must Have

  • A PhD in a relevant field, with the ability to maintain and develop their knowledge in the subject area
  • Experience of successfully developing and delivering teaching at university level, preferably at postgraduate level
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including encouraging the commitment to learn in others

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available from 1 November 2026 for 3 years in the first instance.
