Company Description

Melrose Surgical Centre is a premier day hospital in Melrose Estate, Johannesburg, located at 52 Glenhove Road. The centre combines the heritage of the original Pharmaceutical Society and South African Pharmacy Museum with modern, state-of-the-art medical facilities. Founded by a group of leading Johannesburg surgeons and physicians, the hospital is dedicated to delivering empathetic, high-quality care. Role Description

The Unit Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a clinical unit to ensure safe, efficient, and patient-centered care. This full-time, on-site role, based in Meredale, includes:

  • Managing nursing and support staff
  • Coordinating patient flow
  • Maintaining high clinical and service standards

  • Collaborating with surgeons, physicians, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Managing unit resources and stock levels
  • Driving quality improvement initiatives and patient experience programs

The Unit Manager reports on unit performance, addresses operational challenges proactively, and helps foster a positive, respectful work culture.

Qualifications

  • Strong leadership and people management skills, with experience supervising multidisciplinary clinical teams.
  • Proficiency in clinical operations management, including patient flow coordination, staffing, and resource allocation.
  • Solid understanding of healthcare quality standards, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance in a hospital or day hospital setting.
  • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with surgeons, physicians, staff, patients, and families.
  • Demonstrated ability in problem-solving, decision-making, and handling unit-level operational issues under pressure.
  • Experience with healthcare documentation, reporting, and basic computer literacy (EHR systems, email, and standard office software).
  • Relevant clinical qualification (e.g., Registered Nurse or equivalent) and current professional registration with the appropriate council.
  • Previous experience as a Unit Manager or in a senior nursing/clinical leadership role, preferably in a surgical or acute care environment.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and to maintaining a respectful, inclusive, and patient-focused workplace.
