About the Role
The School of Geography and Planning is seeking an inspiring, experienced lecturer to support our planning programmes, including:
- BA Geography and Planning
- 4-year integrated Master’s in Planning (MPlan)
- Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning
- Master’s in Urban Design & Planning
As a key member of the team, you will contribute to teaching, research, and knowledge exchange in a globally recognised school. We are committed to fostering your professional development, enabling you to grow as an academic through collaborations within the School, Faculty, and University.

Teaching & Course Development
- Design teaching programmes, setting learning objectives and selecting curricula, methods, and resources
- Develop study materials, delivery schedules, and contingency plans
- Lead or contribute to teaching teams as a co-ordinator or member
Student Support & Assessment
- Deliver engaging lectures and workshops, fostering critical discourse and independent thinking
- Conduct module assessments, including:
- Designing assessment instruments and criteria
- Marking and moderating assignments
- Providing constructive feedback (written/verbal)
- Collaborating with external examiners
- Attending exam boards and finalising student grades
- Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations & projects
Academic & Professional Engagement
- Participate in quality assurance, student promotion, and recruitment activities
- Embed digital accessibility in all teaching materials
- Contribute to ‘Sheffield Academic’ principles, advancing excellence in research and impact
- Stay updated with industry and academic advancements in planning
- Engage in long-term planning, policy development, and administrative duties
Person Specification

Essential Criteria
- Doctoral qualification (PhD) or equivalent professional experience in a planning-related field
- Specialist knowledge of planning practices and theories
- Teaching experience in planning (proven through modules designed/delivered)
- Ability to communicate research findings to undergraduate/postgraduate students
- Adherence to deadlines and strong project management skills
- Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI)
- Strong interpersonal skills for collaboration with colleagues, students, and external stakeholders
