Job Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 12-month secondment within the GI Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Team as an Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) Clinical Nurse Specialist.
In this role, you will provide expert support and guidance to patients who have been diagnosed with cancer, as well as those living with and beyond a cancer diagnosis. You will work closely with our UGI Consultant Surgeons, Gastroenterology Consultants, and Oncology Consultants to ensure patients receive high-quality, patient-centred care throughout their cancer journey.
You will be joining a well-established and supportive team of Clinical Nurse Specialists and will receive ongoing support from both your colleagues and the CNS Team Leader.

Main duties of the job
- Provide expert support, information, and counselling to patients with Upper GI and oncology cancers, discussing diagnosis, treatment options, and prognosis with sensitivity and compassion.
- Deliver nurse-led follow-up clinics and telephone support throughout the patient cancer pathway.
- Manage telephone triage services, ensuring timely assessment and resolution of patient concerns, symptoms, and treatment-related issues.
- Act as a specialist resource, educator, and role model for nursing colleagues, promoting high standards of patient-centred care.
- Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to coordinate care and improve outcomes for Upper GI and oncology patients.
- Ensure patients and carers have access to relevant information, support services, treatment resources, and health promotion advice.
- Ensure completion of Holistic Needs Assessments (HNA).
- Attend and contribute to Upper GI MDT meetings, supporting service delivery and achievement of cancer performance targets.
- Coordinate referrals to appropriate hospital, community, and support services to ensure seamless patient care.
- Contribute to the development of clinical protocols, guidelines, and integrated care pathways.
- Promote a culture of compassionate, patient-centred care, proactively addressing concerns and supporting complaint resolution where required.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
Main Duties
- Act as an autonomous expert practitioner and key worker for patients referred on the Upper GI suspected cancer pathway, providing specialist assessment, advice, support, and coordination throughout their diagnostic journey.
- Lead and monitor patient pathways to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment, proactively managing risks, expediting investigations, and reducing delays against national cancer waiting time standards.
- Provide advanced communication and support to patients and families, delivering complex or sensitive information with empathy and advocating for patient-centred care and informed decision-making.
- Work closely with multidisciplinary teams across primary, secondary, and tertiary care to coordinate care, improve pathway efficiency, and ensure seamless communication between services.
- Review pathway performance, identify areas for improvement, and implement service developments to enhance patient experience, clinical outcomes, and operational effectiveness.
- Support and advise clinical and administrative colleagues, providing leadership, mentorship, and specialist expertise to facilitate high-quality care delivery.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation, monitor patient tracking systems, and ensure timely communication of outcomes to patients, GPs, and relevant services.
- Contribute to the development of clinical guidelines, education programmes, audit activities, and quality improvement initiatives, promoting evidence-based practice and continuous service improvement.
- Engage patients and the public in service development, using feedback, audit, and research findings to drive innovation and improve the quality of cancer services.
- Work in accordance with professional, organisational, and regulatory standards, ensuring safe, effective, and compassionate care at all times.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered General Nurse
- Level 2 Psychology Support skills
- Awareness of the national cancer agenda and guidelines
Desirable criteria
- Post basic Oncology qualification
- Advanced Communication Skills Training
Experience
Essential criteria
- Relevant recent experience in Gastroenterology and endoscopy department.
